Twelve member Sri Lanka team will leave today for the Inaugural Asian Youth Scrabble Championships, which is scheduled to be held from tomorrow in New Delhi India .
Sri Lanka players achieved great heights at the recently concluded World English Scrabble Players Association (WESPA) Youth Cup 2022.Adheesha Dissanayake of Gateway College clinched the Under-16 Championship, while gaining a spot amongst the top five players list. Sandali Vithanage of Musaeus College was named Best Female Player for the second consecutive year, as she was the only female player to reach the finals in 2021 and 2022. She also finished in 8th place in the overall tournament.
A total number of 86 players from the UK, US, Australia, Germany, Pakistan, Indonesia, Philippines, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Nigeria, Singapore, Hong Kong, Nepal, and Sri Lanka competed at the event which was conducted as an online tournament.
Thirteen-year-old Adheesha dominated the tournament from the outset, winning 28 out of 36 games in the group stage, 1.5 wins ahead of his nearest opponent at that tournament once again strongest player of the Sri Lanka team in this Asia Youth event in New Delhi .
Sandali Vithanage won 26 games in the group stage with one tie, and went on to win six games in the final stage. Both Vithanage and Dissanayake had the support of Hivin Dilmith of Mahinda College, who finished at 12th position in the overall tournament and Sri Lanka once again expects a lot from these players at this event
The young scrabble players will get exposure at this Asian Youth championship . Sri Lanka Scrabble junior team comprises players from different schools Vinith Bawantha (Mahinda College) Thulnith de Silva (Richmond College) Sandanidu Batheegama (Richmond College) and Nonithma Dharmadasa (Sacred Heart Convent, Galle) all are from Galle while Adheesha Dissanayake (Gateway Colombo)Sandali Vithanage (Musaeus College)Kavindu Mallawaarachchi (Royal College). Ilham Irshad (Gateway College) are from Colombo
