On 05 April 2023, Sri Lanka was elected to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and will serve as a member of the CSW for a four-year term from 2024. As a member of the CSW, Sri Lanka will continue its international engagement in the scope of women empowerment and remain committed to its objective of eliminating gender based discrimination. Bangladesh, Belgium, Bolivia, Colombia, Romania and the Netherlands hold the rest of the seats as member. The CSW is the main UN intergovernmental body which works towards gender equality and women empowerment.

The CSW has played a vital role in drafting the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, which has been ratified by Sri Lanka in 1981. Accordingly, Sri Lanka has undertaken a commitment to adopt pro-equality and pro-empowerment policies. Part of CSW’s mandate also lies in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Agenda of 2030.
