This isn’t just any win, folks. This is a “stop what you’re doing and cheer” kind of moment. For the first time in the history of this competition, a non-Malaysian team has walked away with the top prize. Our Sri Lankan delegation didn’t just participate; they dominated, showed incredible discipline, and brought the trophy home to our beautiful island.

A Historic Milestone for Sri Lanka

The “Sampanthan Paindhamizh Chudar 5.0” is widely regarded as one of the toughest and most respected Tamil debating platforms in the world. Traditionally, the competition has been a stronghold for Malaysian teams, who have a deep-rooted and highly competitive debating culture. However, the 2026 edition saw a shift in the tides as the Sri Lankan team proved that our students are second to none on the world stage.

The Championship Trophy for Sampanthan Paindhamizh Chudar 5.0

The journey to the championship was not an easy one. Debating at this level requires more than just a mastery of the language; it requires sharp critical thinking, the ability to construct complex arguments on the fly, and a deep understanding of cultural and social nuances. Our students displayed all of these qualities and more, earning high praise from the judges and the Malaysian audience alike.

Meet Our Brilliant Champions

The team was composed of four exceptional students from different parts of Sri Lanka, showcasing the unified talent of our nation. These youngsters have become overnight inspirations for students across the country and the diaspora.

  • Hareish Jeyaruban (Team Captain): Hailing from Royal College, Colombo, Hareish led the team with poise and strategic brilliance. His leadership was instrumental in navigating the high-pressure environment of the international stage.
  • Michael Jenushan: Representing St. Patrick’s College, Jaffna, Michael’s debating skills were a testament to the rich academic tradition of the North.
  • Sivajiny Pratheepan: A brilliant student from Methodist Girls’ High School, Point Pedro, Sivajiny brought a unique perspective and sharp analytical skills to the team.
  • Lakshmitha Sivasankaran: From Sri Shanmuga Hindu Ladies College, Trincomalee, Lakshmitha completed the powerhouse quartet, demonstrating that excellence in debating knows no geographical boundaries in Sri Lanka.

It is heartening to see students from Colombo, Jaffna, Point Pedro, and Trincomalee coming together as one team to represent Sri Lanka. This victory belongs to the entire nation and serves as a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we work together.

Praised for Discipline and Dignity

Beyond their mastery of the Tamil language and their sharp debating skills, the Sri Lankan delegation was highly commended for their conduct throughout the competition. Observers and organisers noted their exceptional discipline, academic excellence, and the dignified way they represented their country.

In international forums, your conduct often speaks louder than your words. These students didn’t just win a trophy; they won hearts. They showed the world the character of Sri Lankan youth, respectful, intelligent, and fiercely capable. For our community here at eLanka, this is exactly the kind of “Good News” story we love to celebrate. It highlights the untapped potential of our younger generation and provides a shining example for others to follow.

Why This Matters for the Global Sri Lankan Community

For those of us in the diaspora, whether you are in Australia, the UK, Canada, or the US, stories like this keep us connected to our heritage. Language is a vital bridge to our culture, and seeing these young students excel in Tamil debating on an international platform is a source of immense pride. It reinforces the importance of preserving our linguistic traditions while striving for global academic standards.

Victories like this don’t happen in a vacuum. They are the result of hard work by the students, dedicated coaching by their teachers, and the unwavering support of their families. As a community, we can continue to support such talent by staying engaged and celebrating their successes.

The Future of Sri Lankan Debating

This historic win in Malaysia is hopefully just the beginning. It has set a new benchmark for what Sri Lankan school debaters can achieve. We expect to see more teams participating in international circuits, not just in Tamil, but in Sinhala and English as well.

The skills learned in debating, research, public speaking, empathy, and logic, are essential for the leaders of tomorrow. Hareish, Michael, Sivajiny, and Lakshmitha have shown that they are already well on their way to becoming those leaders.

A modern international debate hall where history was made

Let’s all take a moment to congratulate these four brilliant minds. They have made history, they have made us proud, and they have put Sri Lanka firmly on the global map of academic excellence.

Well done, Tuskers of the debating world!
