The roar of powerful engines echoed across the tarmac at Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Base Katunayake on 11 June 2026, marking a pivotal milestone in the nation’s aerial defence history. In a demonstration of technical prowess and successful international collaboration, the first of the newly modernised Kfir C12 fighter jets successfully completed its inaugural test flight. This event signifies the commencement of a new era for the SLAF’s No. 10 Fighter Squadron, as it transitions into a more technologically advanced and capable force.

The flight was conducted under the watchful eyes of senior Air Force officials and technical experts from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), the original manufacturer and primary partner in this extensive upgrade programme. The mission, led by a highly experienced senior squadron commander, was reported as a complete success, with the aircraft meeting all performance benchmarks across its various flight envelopes. This development is not merely a routine test flight but represents the culmination of years of planning and engineering effort to revitalise Sri Lanka’s primary interceptor fleet.

A Legacy of Service and the Path to Modernisation

The Kfir, a versatile all-weather multirole combat aircraft, has been the backbone of the Sri Lanka Air Force’s fast-jet capability since its initial induction in the mid-1990s. Stationed at the strategically vital SLAF Base Katunayake, the No. 10 Fighter Squadron has operated these aircraft through some of the most challenging periods in the nation’s history. However, as aviation technology advanced globally, the need for a comprehensive modernisation of the fleet became increasingly apparent to ensure continued operational relevance and national security.

In 2021, the Sri Lankan government approved a significant contract with Israel Aerospace Industries to upgrade five remaining Kfir airframes. This ambitious project was designed to address the challenges of ageing systems while integrating state-of-the-art technology that aligns the aircraft with modern “Block 60” standards. The programme focuses on five specific aircraft: four single-seat variants and one twin-seat trainer, ensuring that the squadron remains a formidable force for the next two decades.

Technical Precision: The “Block 60” Transformation

The transition to the C12 standard, often referred to within defence circles as the “Block 60” standard, involves a radical overhaul of the aircraft’s internal architecture. The most visible and impactful change is the installation of a modern “glass cockpit.” This digital interface replaces the traditional analogue dials and gauges with multi-function displays (MFDs), providing pilots with a streamlined and intuitive flow of information. Such an environment is essential for modern combat, where situational awareness can be the difference between mission success and failure.

Beyond the cockpit, the upgrade includes advanced avionics and sensor suites. The integration of high-definition radar systems and sophisticated electronic warfare capabilities allows the Kfir C12 to detect and engage targets at significantly greater ranges and with higher precision than ever before. Furthermore, the aircraft’s airframe has undergone life-extension work, ensuring that these machines can continue to fly safely and effectively well into the 2040s.

The partnership with Israel Aerospace Industries has been instrumental in this process. IAI’s expertise in modernising legacy platforms has allowed the SLAF to achieve a “force multiplier” effect, obtaining capabilities comparable to many modern 4.5-generation fighters without the prohibitive costs associated with purchasing entirely new aircraft. This cost-effective strategy has been praised by military analysts as a pragmatic approach to national defence in a complex economic landscape.

National Security and the Global Sri Lankan Community

The success of the Kfir modernisation programme is a source of immense pride for Sri Lankans at home and for the global Sri Lankan community residing in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It serves as a testament to the high level of technical skill present within the Sri Lanka Air Force’s engineering wings. Throughout the project, SLAF engineers worked side-by-side with Israeli technicians, facilitating a significant transfer of knowledge and technical expertise that will benefit the nation’s aerospace sector for years to come.

For those in the community who follow national developments closely, this achievement highlights the ongoing commitment to maintaining a robust and modern defence infrastructure. It is a story of resilience and forward-thinking, demonstrating that with the right partnerships and a clear vision, the nation can overcome technological hurdles and emerge stronger.

Looking Ahead: The Future of the Fleet

With the first aircraft now successfully through its initial testing phase, the focus shifts to the remaining four jets in the programme. The lessons learned during the modernisation of this first C12 will be applied to accelerate the delivery of the rest of the fleet. Once complete, the No. 10 Fighter Squadron will be replete with a unified, high-tech squadron of Kfirs, ready to meet any challenge in Sri Lankan airspace.

This modernisation effort is part of a broader vision for the Sri Lanka Air Force, which includes the recent upgrades to other transport and reconnaissance assets. As the nation continues to navigate the complexities of regional security, having a reliable and technologically advanced air arm remains a top priority. The successful flight at Katunayake is a clear signal that the SLAF is well on its way to achieving this objective.
