The Current Extreme Heat Conditions-by Kalani-eLanka

Current Extreme Heat Conditions-eLanka

In recent days, Sri Lanka and many parts of the world have been experiencing unusually high temperatures. Especially in inland and coastal areas, temperatures have risen above normal levels, significantly affecting daily life.

Causes of Extreme Heat

Several key factors contribute to this situation:

  • Climate Change: The overall rise in global temperatures has increased the number of hot days.
  • Intense Solar Radiation: During this period of the year, the sun’s rays are more direct and stronger.
  • Deforestation: The cutting down of trees reduces natural cooling in the environment.
  • Urbanization: Increased concrete structures create a “heat island effect,” making cities hotter.

Impacts of High Temperatures

Extreme heat can have serious effects on both people and the environment:

  • Health Issues: Heat stress, heatstroke, dehydration, and fatigue.
  • Agriculture: Damage to crops and reduced productivity.
  • Water Shortages: Reduced rainfall leads to lower water levels.
  • Increased Electricity Demand: More use of fans and air conditioning.

 How to Stay Safe

To protect yourself from extreme heat, consider the following:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day
  • Avoid going outside during 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM when the sun is strongest
  • Wear light, loose, and light-colored clothing
  • Use hats, umbrellas, and sunscreen
  • Take extra care of children and the elderly

Conclusion

Extreme heat is not just a temporary issue but a long-term environmental concern. Therefore, it is important to take actions such as protecting the environment, planting trees, and reducing energy consumption to help mitigate its effects.
