Toole Dwyer med rel – ANZAC Day Long Weekend Double Demerits

Double demerits will come into effect ahead of the ANZAC Day long weekend with motorists urged to take extra care on roads across NSW.

The NSW Police Force will conduct its road safety operation with double demerits in force from 12:01am Friday 24 April to 11:59pm Monday 27 April 2026.

Last year’s road toll was another devastating reminder of the dangers on our roads, with 355 lives lost, 28 more than the previous year.

Shadow Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said thousands of families are expected to hit the road.

“Drivers taking unnecessary risks is exactly what leads to crashes. There is no excuse especially on long weekends with more people on our roads,” Mr Toole said.

“Police will be out in force this ANZAC Day so don’t let a moment of stupidity cause a lifetime of regret.”

“Whether it’s checking a message, speeding or driving under the influence, these decisions can have tragic consequences.”

Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Transport and Roads Robert Dwyer said the message is clear.

“Double demerits aren’t just a warning they are a reminder that one bad decision behind the wheel can change lives forever.

“Motorists are being urged to plan ahead, allow extra travel, check conditions before leaving and be patient on the road.”
