Vision Care marks “World Glaucoma Week 2023” by emphasizing risk factors and importance of early detection
Vision Care, Sri Lanka’s largest vision and eye wear solutions provider, is marking “World Glaucoma Week”, the annual global initiative of the World Glaucoma Association (WGA) that creates awareness on the dangers of glaucoma. During the month of March, Vision Care will be providing free eye checkups at all branches while free health camps will also be held at selected branches island-wide.
Glaucoma is known to be the second cause of blindness, and is irreversible. It is a chronic, progressive, degenerative disorder of the optic nerve that produces characteristic visual field damage. Statistics show that around 80 million people have glaucoma worldwide. As Glaucoma does not show any symptoms in its early stages, up to 50% of the individuals with glaucoma are unaware that they have the disease, and this number may be even higher in underdeveloped countries. If not detected on time or left untreated, glaucoma may progress to cause blindness.
Those at risk of glaucoma are individuals over 40 years with any one of the following health conditions: a family history of glaucoma, poor vision, an eye injury, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, high eye pressure, near-sightedness or far-sightedness as well as those using certain steroid medications. The best way to combat Glaucoma is to carry out regular eye checks at a reputed eyecare provider. With early diagnosis, careful monitoring and regular treatment, the vast majority of people retain useful sight for life.
