what he believes is rightfully his – By Dr Harold Gunatillake

The initiative revitalised by former President Trump to directly engage with global issues.

The Putin-Zelenskyy saga will never end until Putin gets his pound of flesh, as he claims.

Trump, acting as the matchmaker or marriage broker, actively advocated for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, recently holding a two-hour call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

After their discussion, Trump shared the exciting news that Russia and Ukraine would “immediately” start discussing a ceasefire.

While Trump feels hopeful about this development, it’s important to note that Putin hasn’t fully committed to an unconditional ceasefire, emphasising that the underlying issues of the conflict need to be addressed first.

In an encouraging step forward, Trump also reached out to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is advocating for stronger sanctions on Russia if Putin doesn’t agree to a ceasefire. Likewise, European leaders are joining the chorus, urging the Kremlin to accept a 30-day unconditional ceasefire. Yet, despite all this momentum, Putin remains careful, indicating that Russia is open to collaborating with Ukraine on a future peace accord memo. However, he hasn’t pinpointed a specific timeline yet.

While the influence of President Trump may initiate negotiations, it is imperative to recognise that President Putin retains ultimate authority over Russia’s military operations.

While Trump’s influence might spark negotiations, it’s crucial to remember that Putin ultimately has the final say over Russia’s military actions.

Therefore, for any ceasefire to take effect, both Russia and Ukraine must reach a mutual agreement. The situation is evolving, with ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the war.

President Trump also engaged in discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has advocated for the implementation of more stringent sanctions against Russia should President Putin decline to accede to a ceasefire. European leaders have similarly exerted pressure on the Kremlin to agree to a 30-day unconditional ceasefire. Despite these initiatives, President Putin remains cautious, asserting that Russia is prepared to collaborate with Ukraine on a memorandum regarding a prospective peace accord; however, he has not provided a definitive timeline. While President Trump’s influence may facilitate negotiations, President Putin ultimately retains control over Russia’s military decisions, and any ceasefire would necessitate mutual agreement between Russia and Ukraine. The situation remains dynamic, with ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at concluding the conflict.

Trump’s call with Putin carries significant diplomatic and geopolitical implications:

Potential Shift in U.S.-Russia Relations—The discussion indicates a reinvigorated initiative by Trump to directly address global matters with Putin, especially concerning the war in Ukraine. Analysts propose that this engagement can reshape the U.S. strategy towards Russia, potentially promoting cooperation or exacerbating tensions based on the resulting developments.

Putin emphasised that Russia’s main objective remains eliminating the root causes of the conflict.

  • Ceasefire Negotiations – Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine would immediately begin negotiations toward a However, Putin emphasised that Russia’s main objective remains eliminating the root causes of the conflict. This suggests that while talks may begin, a resolution is far from guaranteed.
  • Impact on Ukraine’s Position – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged stronger sanctions on Russia if Putin does not agree to a The call may pressure Ukraine to negotiate, but Zelenskyy remains cautious about Russia’s intentions.

Economic Considerations—Former President Trump emphasised the potential for extensive trade between Russia and the United States following the conclusion of the war. This indicates that economic incentives may significantly influence future diplomatic initiatives.

  • Global Perception – European leaders have advocated for a 30- day unconditional ceasefire; however, Russia has expressed resistance. This appeal may affect international viewpoints regarding Trump’s capacity to mediate the conflict and could shape forthcoming diplomatic

Although this appeal represents a move towards dialogue, the pathway to peace remains uncertain, with both parties adhering to steadfast positions. The ensuing weeks will determine whether this discussion results in concrete advancements or constitutes a symbolic gesture.

Russia and Ukraine are coming back together to discuss a ceasefire immediately! This exciting news comes from Donald Trump, who wrapped up a more than two-hour phone call with Vladimir Putin, marking their third chat in only three months!
