People’s Bank’s Annual Report 2022, titled Creating a Legacy of Caring for Generations to Come, won five awards at the recently held International ARC Awards 2023.

With a history spanning over 30 years, and an annual application pool of over 1,600 applications from over 90 countries, the ARC Awards are widely known as the Oscars for Annual Reports by the international financial community.

The accolades received by the Bank were across several categories and, most notably, it was the only Licensed Bank from Sri Lanka to win a gold at this year’s event.

Bank’s Chairman Sujeewa Rajapakse stated: “The awards are a testament to the Bank’s remarkable ability to seamlessly merge financial transparency with creative storytelling. This annual report goes beyond figures, encapsulating the Bank’s strategic direction, accomplishments, and dedication to stakeholders in a captivating narrative covering both quantitative and qualitative aspects of its business.”

“Over the last several years, the Bank has repeatedly been recognised for adopting and maintaining the highest international standards in corporate reporting via its annual reports, which have won many prestigious awards both locally and internationally.”

The Bank’s Chief Executive Officer/ General Manager Clive Fonseka stated: “This accomplishment testifies to our continuing pursuit of excellence in fostering open and transparent communication with all our stakeholders. The ARC Awards represent the pinnacle of recognition for exceptional achievements in corporate communications, annual reports, and investor relations materials. This year’s event, in particular, saw an unparalleled level of competition, with submissions from many banking institutions globally. The recognition strengthens our resolve to keep pushing the boundaries of excellence and performance in all aspects of our business operations”

Bank’s Head of Finance Azzam A. Ahamat stated: “The recognition is another feather in our journey of setting benchmarks in the space of integrated reporting. It attests to the Bank’s success in providing financial and qualitative insight on a 360-degree basis and in a broad macro-context. Our Integrated Annual Report 2022 ultimately tells our story of struggle and triumph – in a year of unprecedented challenges and change – to support both the country and all the Bank’s stakeholders in their time of severe distress. Additionally, in line with the need to consider sustainability in all its aspects, an increasing emphasis was placed on Environmental, Social, and Governance factors.”

“CITY OF GEMS” RATNAPURA Ratnapura, known as the “City of Gems” in Sri Lanka, derives its name from the Sanskrit words “ratna” (gemstone) and “pura” (town or city). As the hub of Sri Lanka’s gem mining industry. The name is derived from Sanskrit and Pali, languages that heavily influenced the region over 2000 years ago. The city earned this name because it has been the traditional center of Sri Lanka’s gem trade for over 2,000 years. It is the primary source of world-renowned precious stones, including blue sapphires, rubies, and cat’s eyes. Some historical accounts suggest a different origin linked to the Portuguese colonial era. There is a view that the name could be derived from the Portuguese word “Rapadura,” which refers to jaggery. Ratnapura is the heart of Sri Lanka’s gem industry, often called the “gem capital of the world” due to its incredible geological wealth and ancient trading history. The region is famous for producing over 40 of the 85 known gemstone varieties in the world. The most famous is the “Ceylon Sapphire,” prized for its vivid cornflower and royal blue hues. Other varieties include yellow, pink, and the rare orange-pink Padparadscha. Specialty Stones: Includes the rare Alexandrite (which changes color in different light), Cat’s Eye Chrysoberyl, Spinel, Tourmaline, Garnet, and Moonstone. The sapphire in Princess Diana’s Iconic engagement ring is a Ceylon sapphire from the Ratnapura area. Many world-renowned gems were unearthed in the Ratnapura district. One of the largest faceted blue sapphires ever found in Ratnapura, Blue Giant of the Orient is over 465 carats. The city features remains of a Portuguese-Dutch Fort, which now houses the National Gem and Jewellery Authority. Ratnapura is the starting point for the “classic” hard route (Gilimale route) to the sacred Sripada. Ratnapura district is home to a significant number of spectacular waterfalls, often described as having the highest concentration of waterfalls in Sri Lanka. – By Francis Paul Welangoda
