Colombo Medical School Alumni Association celebrates 12th anniversary

Colombo Medical School Alumni Association (CoMSAA) has celebrated its 12th anniversary with a Reunion recently at the Hotel Jie Jie, Panadura.

The Reunion of the CoMSAA was held after a lapse of three years due to the pandemic.

Nearly a hundred alumni, including several from overseas, attended the weekend Reunion.

A musical evening with song and dance and a gala dinner was followed the next day with an academic session.

Lectures on timely topics, Pros and Cons of Beauty Care and on the Assessment of Brain Function and Prevention of Cognitive  Decline with Ageing were well received by the participants.

The highlight of the sessions was a debate on whether the best option now for young doctors is migration to greener pastures. Show of hands by the audience at the end of the debate indicated that the opinion was evenly divided on this matter of current controversy.

Formed only in 2011, although the Colombo Medical School itself was established over 150 years ago, the Association, has a membership of over 1100 at present.

It is playing a significant role in bringing the alumni spread all over the world together and to keep them in contact with the faculty for mutual benefit.

It is in the process of establishing branches or affiliated associations in several major cities abroad with a significant number of alumni.

The Association is assisting the development of the infrastructure of the medical faculty. It has made a significant contribution towards furnishing of the library, auditoria and several other areas in the new state of the art, fourteen storey building complex.

Providing financial assistance and equipment like stethoscopes to the needy medical students has been a regular activity. Over ten million rupees, donated by members and other well-wishers, has been disbursed for this purpose by the Association over the years.

Holding various academic programmes and quiz competitions etc  among the students and the CoMSAA Oration are some of the annual activities of the Association.

The annual CoMSAA lecture is on non-medical topics of current interest. The Colombo Medical Congress, with the participation of eminent medical experts from here and abroad, is jointly organised every year by the CoMSAA and the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo.

The Association is actively promoting research by the faculty staff and the students.

The President Prof. Sanath Lamabadusuriya. Secretary Dr. Nilanka Wickremasinghe and the Social Secretary Dr. Pramila Senanayake were the main organisers of this very successful event, much enjoyed by the alumni.
