Tourists in Sri Lanka – by Dr. Harold Gunatillake

Harold-Gunethilake

The current situation of the tourist influx in Sri Lanka. Presented by Dr Harold Gunatillake, OAM

Discover the breathtaking Island that has taken the world by storm, attracting a staggering number of tourists.

Experience the island’s beauty like never before as tourism continues to soar. Join the countless visitors flocking to this resplendent paradise and discover why it’s the destination of choice for so many.

In July 2023, Sri Lanka witnessed a remarkable surge in international tourist arrivals compared to the same period in 2022. Foreign tourist

arrivals skyrocketed by 202.4% year-on-year, reaching 143,039 visitors.

This significant increase in tourist arrivals during July 2023 can be attributed to several factors, including the ongoing recovery of the tourism sector, pent-up demand, improved air connectivity, and the recent opening of China as a critical market. This positive trend is expected to persist throughout the year, according to the monthly Snapshot of International Arrivals to Sri Lanka from Immigration Statistics.

When analysing the data from January to July 2023, the cumulative figure of tourist arrivals reached 767,913, surpassing the numbers of the previous year, which recorded 458,670 arrivals.

This growth indicates a robust rebound in the tourism industry as the numbers exceed pre-pandemic levels.

The number of foreign tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka climbed by 261.2% year-on-year to 136,405 in August 2023, following a 202.4% jump in the previous month. The notable rise in tourist arrivals was driven by the ongoing recovery of the tourism sector, a pent-up demand for travel following pandemic-related restrictions, improvements in air connectivity, and China’s reopening policy. Among key markets, India (22.4%) remained the largest source of foreign tourists, followed by the UK (11%), China (6.8%), Germany (6.2%), and Russia (5%). For the first eight months of the year, foreign tourist arrivals soared by 82.2% from the same period a year ago to 904,318.

The top five source markets for Sri Lanka’s tourism in July 2023 were India, the United Kingdom, China, Germany and Russia. These countries played a crucial role in driving the surge in tourist arrivals, contributing to the overall recovery of Sri Lanka’s tourism sector.

Furthermore, comparing June 2023 to July 2023, there was a significant increase of 42% in tourist arrivals. This growth further highlights the accelerated pace of recovery and the growing interest among international travellers to visit Sri Lanka. We, that is my nephew Sugeeva, hotelier of the Oak Ray group of hotels over 20 on the island, my niece, and I paid a surprise visit to Negombo during the week; last Monday,

We noticed that all the four and 5-star hotels were booked except at Goldi Beach Hotel; we were lucky to get two rooms for the night.

We strolled out in the night to have dinner in a street restaurant, and the streets were like in any developed country, full of little restaurants and hotels with bright, illuminated lights were seen right through the streets. Almost from every hotel, loud hot music and groups of young ones singing and dancing were heard.

The following day, I had the opportunity to meet many tourists at the hotel where we stayed overnight. Most have arrived from Holland, Finland, Germany, France, the UK and Australia.

The latest statistics from the central bank show that for the first time since the pandemic hit, tourism earnings during the first three months of 2023 crossed the

$500 million mark, reaching $529 million.

Revenue in the Travel & Tourism market is projected to reach US$301.20m in 2023. Payment is expected to show an annual growth rate of 6.25%, resulting in a projected market volume of US$383.90m by 2027.

So, viewers, the island on this planet is regaining glory as the top tourist attraction spot, and the country will regain its top place globally.

I hope you liked this positive, encouraging video presentation for our future. Please stay safe and goodbye until we meet again.
