Bernard Rulach, an aggressive left-hand batsman and an excellent fielder, was born on this day in 1947,
Bernard Rulach, born on 2 October 1947, was an aggressive left-hand batsman and an excellent fielder. He played for St. Mary’s College Dehiwela. Rulach toured Australia with National School Cricket Association team in 1964 and captained the National School Cricket Association team against London Schoolboy cricketers in January 1966. After leaving school, he joined the Colombo Colts Cricket Club. Rulach and Roy Dias beat Michael Tissera and David Heyn in the final of the Double Wicket Tournament organised by the Colts CC as part of their centenary celebrations in 1973.
India captained by Ajit Wadekar toured Sri Lanka in 1974. Rulach made his international debut for Sri Lanka in the second limited overs match played at the Colombo Cricket Club Ground on 6 February 1974.
Sri Lanka: Bandula Warnapura, Sunil Wettimuny, Anura Tennekoon (captain), Duleep Mendis, Ranjit Fernando, Jayantha Seneviratne, Bernard Rulach, D. S. de Silva, Mevan Pieris, Sarath Fernando and Tony Opatha,
India: Sunil Gavaskar, Gopal Bose, Parthasarathy Sharma, Ashok Mankad, Eknath Solkar, Brijesh Patel, Madan Lal, S. Venkataraghavan (captain), Karsan Ghavri, Bharath Reddy and P. Salgaonkar.
Sri Lanka lost wickets regularly and with the score at 57 for six, Rulach joined D. S. de Silva and they helped Sri Lanka to recover by adding 21 runs. Sri Lanka were all out for 108. India won by five-wickets.
