Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, also known as the Muttiah Muralitharan International Cricket Stadium, is one of the premier cricket venues in Sri Lanka. Located in the town of Pallekele, approximately 10 kilometers east of Kandy, this stadium has become a significant landmark in the world of cricket since its establishment.

The construction of Pallekele International Cricket Stadium was initiated to provide Sri Lanka with a modern facility capable of hosting international cricket matches. The stadium was officially opened in 2009 and was built in preparation for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, which Sri Lanka co-hosted along with India and Bangladesh.

Stadium Features and Facilities

  1. Seating Capacity: The stadium can accommodate approximately 35,000 spectators, providing a vibrant and enthusiastic atmosphere during matches.
  2. Pitch and Ground Conditions: The pitch at Pallekele is known for its balanced nature, offering assistance to both batsmen and bowlers. The outfield is well-maintained, ensuring smooth play and minimal interruptions.
  3. Pavilion and Stands: The stadium boasts modern pavilions and stands, equipped with comfortable seating arrangements, VIP boxes, media centers, and player facilities. The infrastructure is designed to provide an excellent viewing experience for spectators and a comfortable environment for players.
  4. Floodlights: Pallekele International Cricket Stadium is equipped with state-of-the-art floodlighting, allowing for day-night matches. This feature has made it a popular venue for limited-overs internationals and T20 matches.
