SUNDAY CHOICE – Sunday School Memories – By Charles Schokman

On the 8th September 2024 the Dematagoda Christian Guild commemorated the 90th Anniversary of its legacy and as I began to reminisce it brought back happy memories that kept flashing through my mind and I am happy to share it with you. I was reminded of its  Motto:—“By Love serve One Another” that is focussed on 1 Corinthians:13. and the song that went with it.

1 Angry words! oh, let them never
From the tongue unbridled slip:
May the heart’s best impulse ever
Check them ere they soil the lip.

Chorus:

“Love one another,” thus saith the Saviour;
Let us obey the Father’s blest command;
“Love one another,” thus saith the Saviour;
Let us obey His blest command.

2 Love is much too pure and holy,
Friendship is too sacred far,
For a moment’s reckless folly
Thus to desolate and mar. [Chorus]

3 Angry words are lightly spoken,
Bitt’rest tho’ts are rashly stirred,
Brightest links of life are broken,
By a single angry word. [Chorus]

On prayer we were taught that—”Prayer is the means by which the Power of God is made known.
Prayer is the key that unlocks all difficulties”
The Favourite Hymn
What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden,
cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge;
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In his arms he’ll take and shield thee;
thou wilt find a solace there.
The Collection (Offering) Chorus
The Commitment Chorus
Pray that these Hymns /Choruses will remind us of
our Childhood when our paren laid down the
foundation of our Christian Faith.
You are welcome to pass this on.
