Cloves- their health benefits – By Dr Harold Gunatillake

Cloves- their health benefits - By Dr Harold Gunatillake

Harold-GunethilakeI was asked whether drinking water with a clove put into boiling water is good.

That gave me an idea to explore and write this article.

Cloves are a versatile spice with numerous health benefits. Here are some key advantages:

1. Rich in Nutrients: Cloves contain fibre, vitamins, and minerals. They are exceptionally high in manganese, essential for brain function and bone health1.

2. High in Antioxidants: Cloves are rich in antioxidants, which help reduce oxidative stress and may lower the risk of chronic diseases1.

3. Anti-inflammatory Properties: Cloves’ eugenol has been shown to reduce inflammation, which can help with conditions like arthritis.

4. Blood Sugar Regulation: Cloves may help regulate blood sugar levels, making them beneficial for people with diabetes1.

5. Antibacterial Effects: Cloves have antimicrobial properties that can help kill harmful bacteria1.

6. Digestive Health: Cloves can improve digestion by stimulating the secretion of digestive enzymes.

7. Liver Health: Some studies suggest that the compounds in cloves may help improve liver health.

8. Cancer Protection: Research indicates that eugenol in cloves may have anticancer properties.

Drinking Clove Water

Adding a clove to hot water and drinking it can be beneficial. This simple infusion can help:

• Boost Digestion: Drinking clove water can aid digestion and reduce bloating3.

• Relieve Cold and Flu Symptoms: Clove water can help alleviate symptoms of respiratory infections3.

• Improve Oral Health: The antibacterial properties of cloves can help maintain oral hygiene.

How to Prepare Clove Water
1. Boil a cup of water.
2. Add 1-2 cloves to the boiling water.
3. Let it steep for 5-10 minutes.
4. Strain and drink.

I’ve been inserting a clove into the electric kettle and replacing it weekly. This way, I can enjoy the health benefits of cloves when drinking my tea and coffee. It’s important to consume cloves in moderation to avoid any adverse effects.

What is cinnamon and clove tea good for?

Try this cinnamon, ginger and clove tea, just like Mini … Benefits: Cinnamon, ginger, and clove tea can aid digestion by reducing bloating, gas, and indigestion. The combination of ginger’s ability to stimulate saliva and digestive enzymes, along with the anti-inflammatory properties of cinnamon and cloves,
can soothe the gastrointestinal tract.

“When you drink clove tea, your body may experience several benefits. Clove tea has expectorant properties that can help clear congestion and alleviate respiratory issues such as coughs, colds, and asthma. The warm and aromatic steam from a cup of clove tea can provide soothing relief for your airways, making breathing easier.”

Are cinnamon and cloves good for diabetes?

The bottom line. Many studies have suggested that cinnamon can lower blood sugar and help manage common diabetes complications, among other health benefits. If you want to take a cinnamon supplement or add it to your meals to help lower your blood sugar, it may be best to use Ceylon instead of Cassia.

This is the information I could gather on the subject. I hope you will benefit by viewing it.
