Easter Sunday: A Celebration of Hope and Resurrection-by Kalani-eLanka

Easter Sunday-eLanka

Easter Sunday is one of the most significant and joyous days in the Christian calendar. Celebrated by millions of Christians around the world, Easter marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, an event that forms the foundation of Christian faith.

The Meaning of Easter

Easter symbolizes hope, renewal, and victory over sin and death. According to the New Testament of the Bible, Jesus was crucified on Good Friday and buried in a tomb. On the third day—Easter Sunday—He rose from the dead, fulfilling the prophecy of the Messiah and proving His divine nature.

When is Easter Celebrated?

Easter does not have a fixed date. It is observed on the first Sunday after the full moon following the vernal equinox, usually falling between March 22 and April 25. In 2025, Easter Sunday will be celebrated on April 20.

Traditions and Customs

Easter is celebrated with a variety of customs that blend religious traditions and cultural practices:

  • Church Services: Christians attend special Easter services, often held at sunrise, to rejoice in the resurrection of Christ.

  • Easter Eggs: Symbolizing new life and rebirth, Easter eggs are decorated and often hidden for children to find in Easter egg hunts.

  • Easter Bunny: In Western cultures, the Easter Bunny is a popular figure believed to deliver Easter eggs to children.

  • Festive Meals: Families gather to enjoy special meals, often featuring lamb, ham, or seasonal vegetables.

Easter in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, Easter is celebrated by the Christian community with great devotion. Churches are beautifully decorated, and special masses are held across the country. Many people use the day to reflect, pray, and spend time with loved ones, emphasizing the themes of peace and forgiveness.

The Message of Easter

More than anything, Easter is a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is hope. The resurrection of Jesus offers a message of eternal life, renewal, and the power of faith.
