The Convocation of the University of Peradeniya; 23 and 24 July 2025

The 86 th Convocation of the University of Peradeniya is organised as a majestic ceremony in the presence of dignitaries and parents to witness the graduation of nearly 4450 graduands looking towards the future with optimism and determination. The convocation ceremony this year will be held in four sessions today and tomorrow in the Gymnasium of University of Peradeniya as a joyous and proud occasion while celebrating 83 years of service par excellence to University education in Sri Lanka.

Many illustrious alumni have reaped the benefits of the University education and present students, parents and well- wishers will cherish this historic Convocation taking place in the colourful atmosphere of Peradeniya today and tomorrow.

Let me add a few words to refresh you about the events at the first special convocation of University of Ceylon held on 12 February 1948 at the temporary Convocation Hall in Peradeniya when HRH Duke of Gloucestor, a brother of His Majesty The King, laid the foundation stone for the convocation hall at Peradeniya on this occasion.

Minister of Transport and Works J. L. Kotelawala while inviting the Royal Highness mentioned that the ideal of many educated Ceylonese to have a great University is now being realized and it will be an Inspiration for generations to come.

HRH Duke of Gloucester received the honorary degree as the first in the roll of distinguished graduates in Peradeniya and shared the honours of this convocation with the Prime Minister D. S. Senanayake and Dr. Andreas Nell who first suggested establishing the University on the magnificent surroundings of Peradeniya.

HRH Duke of Gloucestor added that “We are all aware of the great influence which environment plays in the education of young men and women. On this site you have the opportunity of building a University unique in character and suited to the genius of the people of Ceylon. On a site such as this and from the excellent moral foundations that you have already laid, you should be able to build a great University, a university which will add renown to the people of Ceylon”.

These prophetic words are cherished by Peradeniya University Graduates to this date. May this great temple of learning at Peradeniya grow from strength to strength.
