Madhubhashini is the daughter of Professor Emeritus J. B. Disanayaka, a renowned scholar of Sinhala language and culture. Growing up in an intellectually rich environment, she developed an early connection with language, literature, and education. She received her school education at Ladies College in Colombo, before continuing her studies overseas.
Her academic journey took her to the University of Allahabad, where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree. Her dedication to literature later earned her a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship, allowing her to pursue a Masters degree in American and English Literature at New York University in the United States.
Alongside her academic career, Madhubhashini developed a strong reputation as a creative writer. Her literary work has covered a wide range of forms, including novels, short stories, radio plays, children’s stories, and non fiction. Her writing demonstrates her interest in human experiences, relationships, society, and the many dimensions of life.
One of her notable early achievements came in 1990, when her short story collection Driftwood received the State Literary Award for Best Collection of Short Stories in English. This recognition established her as an important literary voice and highlighted the quality of her contribution to English language writing in Sri Lanka.
Her literary success continued in the following years. Her collection Tales of Shades and Shadow was shortlisted for the Gratiaen Prize in 2001, while A Strange Tale of Love was shortlisted for the same prestigious award in 2004. These achievements demonstrated the continuing recognition of her creative writing.
The greatest milestone of her literary career came in 2011, when her novel There Is Something I Have to Tell You won the Gratiaen Prize. The award is one of the most respected recognitions for English language creative writing in Sri Lanka, and winning it placed Madhubhashini among the countrys notable contemporary writers.
Her creative work extends beyond novels and short stories. She has written radio plays such as Voices from Afar and children’s stories including Raththa and Animal Tales. She has also contributed to literary scholarship through her non fiction work Contemporary Sinhala Fiction.
Beyond her achievements as a writer, Madhubhashini has also built an academic career. She has served as Head of English Language at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, combining her passion for literature with her commitment to education.
Her journey represents the meeting of scholarship, creativity, and dedication. From her education in Colombo and India to her postgraduate studies in the United States, and from award winning short stories to an acclaimed novel, Madhubhashini Disanayaka Ratnayaka has created a lasting place for herself in Sri Lankan literary history.
Her story reminds us that literature is not simply about writing books. It is about understanding people, preserving experiences, exploring society, and giving readers new ways to see the world.
