Connect & Cheers 4 Fosters Dialogue on International Trade and Investment

An array of eminent diplomats, business executives and community leaders gathered at L’Aqua Rooftop Terrace, Cockle Bay Wharf, Darling Harbour, Sydney on 15 October 2026 for Connect & Cheers 4: An Evening of Business and Diplomacy, hosted by the Australian Business Summit Council Inc.
The fourth instalment of the series brought together representatives from diverse countries, institutions and industries to exchange perspectives on international markets, commercial capabilities and the role of professional networks in supporting trade and investment.
VIPs and guests included consular, commercial and investment representatives from the United States, China, the Russian Federation, Romania, Iraq, Egypt, Turkiye, Namibia, Colombia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Vanuatu.

Addressing the large audience, ABSC Inc. President Dr Frank Alafaci PhD examined the practical questions that confront businesses intent on overseas expansion, including identifying appropriate contacts, understanding local commercial expectations and determining which relationships to establish before committing substantial resources.
Dr Alafaci’s address placed particular emphasis on the role of diplomatic and consular knowledge in interpreting unfamiliar commercial environments. Differences in language, customary practice and decision-making processes require attention when businesses establish relationships across borders. Understanding these differences could prevent misunderstandings and support more reliable engagement.
This emphasis gave the evening a practical focus wherein discussions were intended to help participants clarify commercial interests, identify relevant sources of information and recognise matters requiring further investigation.
Trust formed another central theme of the ABSC Inc president’s address, linking confidence in a professional relationship to careful listening, clear communication and reliability as participants were encouraged to explain their activities accurately, understand the objectives of others and make introductions where a relevant connection existed.

Follow-up was presented as an essential part of that process, with subsequent correspondence, meetings and exchanges of information that would determine whether an initial discussion developed into sustained engagement.
This connection invites consideration of how participants assess the relevance of an introduction, communicate their expectations and establish a basis for additional discussion. Maintaining those relationships also entails responding to correspondence, honouring commitments and recognising that commercial interests may develop at different rates.
The value of networking can therefore be considered in terms of the quality of subsequent engagement, including whether information is clarified, assumptions are examined and possible areas of cooperation are defined.
These considerations provide a practical basis for evaluating how an evening of introductions might contribute to informed business decisions over time and more considered professional engagement.
The Australian Business Summit Council Inc. is a not-for-profit, multisector organisation dedicated to advancing business, trade, investment, diplomacy and knowledge exchange. Its events, forums and publications bring businesses into contact with diplomatic missions, chambers of commerce, government representatives and community organisations.
ABSC Inc. membership spans different industries and professional networks as a means of facilitating introductions beyond participants’ established circles, including for enterprises beginning to investigate international opportunities.
The Council’s publishing activities extend this exchange of perspectives, with EKONOMOS, its flagship business affairs magazine, featuring article contributions from ambassadors, high commissioners, consuls general, trade commissioners, business executives, academics and other informed commentators.

As editor-in-chief of the publication, the ABSC Inc. President explained that these contributions help readers examine national priorities and industry challenges about which the Connect & Cheers series provides an opportunity to pursue related questions through direct discussion with people whose professional experience informs those perspectives.
Dr Alafaci’s address acknowledged ABSC Inc. Secretary and City of Canada Bay Deputy Mayor Sylvia Alafaci for organising the event, including the invitations, confirmations and logistical arrangements, as well as thanking the Council’s directors, volunteers, members, supporters and the L’Aqua Rooftop Terrace team.
Connect & Cheers 4 reflected the ABSC Inc’s approach to linking commercial enquiry with diplomatic and community expertise. Its longer-term significance will depend on the subsequent work of participants: maintaining contact, investigating opportunities and developing proposals where interests and capabilities align.
