This week we said a humble goodbye to loyal traders Joe and Jacinta Fernandez from Joe’s Fish, who closed their business yesterday after trading at Dandenong Market for 22 years.

Known as The Fish Doctor, Joe’s been in the business for more than 45 years.

Joe has dedicated years of study to the individual behavioural patterns, lifestyle, illnesses and requirements of fish. After immigrating to Australia from Sri Lanka and finishing his career in engineering, Joe knew it was time to begin a career doing something he loved.

Breeding and caring for goldfish has always been a hobby so opening Joe’s Fish felt like a natural first step. “Goldfish are my favourite by far,” said Joe. “And little goldfish tend to be the customers favourite too”.

A passionate fish breeder, Joe provides advice on tropical fish keeping, breeding and enjoying your tropical fish hobby. He’s also a firm believer in the surprising health benefits of a home aquarium.

Seeing many changes in the Market along with the growing clientele, Joe and Jacinta have loved trading at Dandenong Market.

“It’s good to see familiar faces and smiles every Market Day,” said Jacinta.

Joe said “the Market has been a genuine and rewarding place to work at and we really appreciate the people here.” And remember, “fish are friends, not food” according to Bruce the Bull Shark in Finding Nemo and Joe and Jacinta Fernandez of Joe’s Fish.
