Sri Lanka’s archer Sajeev de Silva clinched a silver medal in the team event at the 2023 WAA Joint Training – Asia Archery Challenge, which concluded last week at the prestigious Wonju Archery Centre in the Republic of Korea.

Competing alongside archers from Chinese Taipei and Tajikistan, Sajeev Silva led his team, named “Sniper,” to an impressive second-place finish out of a field of 11 teams, securing the coveted silver medal. This outstanding achievement demonstrated the exceptional skills and teamwork displayed by the trio, with Ming Hsiu of Chinese Taipei and Tajikistan’s

Salimov Salimjon forming the winning combination.

The 2023 WAA Joint Training – Asia Archery Challenge brought together approximately 60 top archers from across Asia, all participating in the Recurve Category. The five-day championship served as a crucial platform for athletes to fine-tune their skills and experience the intensity of a final competition atmosphere.

In the Individual Category, Sajeev de Silva continued to showcase his prowess, securing a commendable fifth-place finish. His fellow Sri Lankan archers, Chandana Abeygunasekara and Kavin Premaratne, gave commendable performances, both finishing in 17th place.

The Mixed Team events saw Chandana Abeygunasekara and Sajeev de Silva combining their talents to secure a fifth-place finish, while Kavin Premaratne partnered by de Silva to also finish in 17th place in the same category.

Reflecting on the significance of the tournament, Sajeev de Silva, the captain of Sri Lanka’s Asia Games archery team, stated, “The tournament was a great platform that replicated the atmosphere of a finals competition, providing us with invaluable experience and preparation ahead of the Asian Games later this month.”
