The gardens of the University of Peradeniya are a breathtaking sight this season, transformed into a vivid sea of colours as flowers of every hue bloom in harmony across the sprawling campus.
What makes these gardens even more remarkable is their history. The land that now nurtures this floral paradise was once a rubber and tea estate, barren of any flowering plants. When plans were made to build a cantonment for the Southeastern Command of Lord Mountbatten, the rubber trees were uprooted — a move that ultimately paved the way for the university’s creation.
Following the transfer of the land to the university by an act of Parliament, the responsibility of developing the campus grounds was entrusted to the first curator of the gardens. Under the guidance of Sir Ivor Jennings, the University’s inaugural Vice Chancellor, the curator and his dedicated team meticulously hand-planted trees that would flourish for generations to come.
Today, their work stands not only as a botanical marvel but also as a living monument to vision, dedication, and legacy. The flowering trees that adorn the campus during this season continue to inspire awe among students, visitors, and nature lovers alike.
