Minister of Industries Wimal Weerawansa and Minister of Energy Udaya Gammanpila were today removed from their Ministerial Portfolios in accordance with the powers vested in President Gotabaya Rajapaksa under Article 47 (II) (b) of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

Following the removal of Ministers Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila from their ministerial portfolios, several ministries were reshuffled.

Gamini Lokuge was sworn in as the new Minister of Energy and Pavithradevi Wanniarachchi was sworn in as the new Minister of Power before President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat this evening.

They previously held the portfolios of Power and Transport respectively, while Wanniarachchi also held the Health portfolio at the height of the Covid pandemic.

Veteran politician, Member of Parliament and former Minister S.B. Dissanayake will be a new face in the present Cabinet as he will replace former Minister Weerawansa in the Industries portfolio. He was sworn in that capacity before President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat last evening.

There was speculation of a major Cabinet reshuffle following the controversial statements made on the Government recently by former Ministers Gammanpila and Weerawansa, whose parties are coalition partners of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP). More details of the reshuffle were not immediately available at the time this edition went to press.

Earlier, former State Minister Susil Premajayantha was also removed from his portfolio.
