DESMOND KELLY

“HELLO” – By Des Kelly This rather interesting story has just appeared on FB, concerning a girl named Margaret Hello, who was supposed to be the girlfriend of Graham Bell. What I wish to know, without being too skeptical, is WHY Graham said the first “hello” into his new invention when he mentioned his sweetheart’s Surname, rather than just saying  “Hi Margaret”, as he would have, if he had just invented this bloody nuisance of a thing, that will remain silent, as long as one sits next to it, and then rings it’s head off, the moment one goes into the toilet. Graham Bell has a lot to answer for, this is why he hasn’t gone to Heaven. Hoping that Marg.Hello says “Hi” to Graham, from time to time, no matter where she is. THIS  will really be true love or loving, on a telephone, as the case may be. ...

“BORN TO BE BLUE” – By Des Kelly I first heard of them after coming to Australia, to become a Citizen and settle here, in Ozi-Land. I reckon that it was either during the late 1960’s or early 1970’s. I did fancy their name, having been one, myself, during my younger days in Ceylon. Then, suddenly, a young lady I knew came  to me, with this cassette-tape by the Mavericks, and after listening to their bright style of music, I became one of their fans overnight and started collecting their recordings to add to my huge collection of Country music, simply because I felt that they were primarily a Country-Rock Band, and a very good one, at that. I would like the readers/members of e’Lanka to know that I do pick only the very best music for them to enjoy while they scroll through the many different reading material (Articles), ...

“SCENIC SPLENDOUR” – by Des Kelly Set to music. My Dreamworld, now affordable for me to see, yet still impossible, because of ill-health, that I least expected in the latter stages of my life, but somehow now presented in the most glorious technicolor available, is this piano improvisation (with photos of Switzerland) by a Pianist, who, for all the World, looks like a seasoned “bikie”, named Waldteufel78, probably born about 44 years ago. In my own humble opinion, I would place Switzerland on a par with the beautiful Ceylon of old, perhaps this is why I enjoyed this ‘clip’ so much and wanted to share it with all the rest of our e’Lanka readers. So, sit back folks, enjoy the Music and the Scenic splendour that is the magical Switzerland, the Swiss Alps, etceter, all on e’Lanka, for you. First Christmas tree – by Des Kelly Something entirely different for our many thousands of avid readers. A good Christmas story, if ever there was one. To the original Scribe whose name is Dennis Dullewe and of course, Keith Bennett, I proffer my thanks. Also, thank you, Charmaine Gunatilleke, for the beautiful picture of a Christmas tree, actually the first that most of us will see, as Christmas is still about a month away. It is what Dennis wrote, that interested me, and I am positive, will interest most e’Lanka readers. I will not keep you good people in any suspence, but, like Covid, Satan is still around, as Dennis points out, and we have to be very careful, or end up in a place where climate change has reached it’s zenith and worse still, will always remain very very hot.I am beginning to feel a bit thirsty, even as ...

NAUSEOUS ? – by Des Kelly With all the political “stuff” around, at the moment, are you feeling a little nauseous?, well, here are 9 effective ways to solve your problem. If you are an expert cook like me (I boil my own rice in a rice-boiler), you should have no problem in fixing your nausea, but, being a  true friend to all e’Lanka Members, I will aat all. If you can manage to make a cup of plain tea (how easy is THAT)??, here is my remedy.  This is mostly available in Sydney, Australia, at the moment (expense negligible), and it is simply called  BELIMAL. A boxful of Belimal Tea should be a necessacity in every home, because this product is pure magic for anyone suffering from nausea, stomach upsets, dysentery, constipation etcetera. ONE cup of Belimal, brewed exactly like a cup of plain tea, solves the problem immediately, ...

THE GOVERNOR’S LOVER – by Des Kelly Image Source : scontent She was indeed the Governor’s lover, and here is the true story of part of the early history of Ceylon. The rather quaint reason for this most fascinating naming of the famous Suburb, Mount Lavinia. Whether he did or not, and the number of times this Governor had his way with this Ceyloness Maiden is uncertain. It depended on the fact of whether or not, the Governor’s was around, I suppose, but thanks to Keith Bennett for sending this in. MOUNT LAVINIA,  an apt name for this beautiful and sexy Suburb. Go there & reminisce the next time you visit SriLanka.   Desmond Kelly (Mr.Music) (Editor-in-Chief.   e’Lanka. ...

“Greatest Test-Batsmen of all time” – by Des Kelly So Cricket is on the boards again. Australia is the greatest Sports – loving Country in the World. There is no doubt about it, at all.  Some of the greatest Sportsmen & Women also come from this huge Island Continent, proud to call themselves Aussies. When I happened to see the ‘post’ about the famous ‘Stars’ who carried their bat’s out to creases all around this planet of ours, I watched with great interest, all the accomplishments of the greatest batsmen ever, and was very proud indeed to notice the name of Kumar Sanghakara, Sri Lanka’s greatest batsman among them, fairly high on the list, as well. What made me prouder still, was the fact that the “TOP” Batsman was Sir Donald Bradman who, in retirement, was also a Director of the South Australian Rubber Mills and decided to pay a ...

“Spanish Medley | කපිරිඤ්ඤා ගීත (Live) – Keerthi Pasquel” – by Des Kelly “QUITE DEFINITELY, One of the most talented Vocalists of Sri Lanka, and has been, for decades now. In addition, Keerthi came to Melbourne many years ago, and I had the pleasure of meeting him personally at my home in Dandenong North, where I found him to be one of the most humble guys that anyone would have the pleasure of meeting. I already knew Keerthi via  his great recording of a song called “Bolanda Kathaa”, again, the best recording of that beautiful song, ever presented. Not only is he a great Vocalist, he also played guitar, and could  make an acoustic bass guitar “talk”, that’s how good he was, a Vocalist/Instrumentalist Supreme, this was Keerthi Pasquel. It is with great pleasure that I present this latter concert, featuring my friend, singing both in Sinhalese and Spanish, a ...

“SAVIOUR OF CEYLON” – by Des Kelly Superb true story sent to us via Victor Melder and Keith Bennett. Remembrance day is now past, but, as I always say. Let us not pay homage to those who went to war, totally uncertain whether they would survive and go back to their families, FOR JUST ONE DAY !!!, These brave people should be remembered every single day of the week, in fact, they should never be forgotten.  Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. Saviour of Ceylon – byJohn Boileau Source: Legion Magazine Patrolling over the Indian Ocean, pilot Leonard Birchall and his aircrew spotted an approaching Japanese fleet It had been a long, uneventful flight. After 12 hours of scanning the vast Indian Ocean without luck, the pilot of the Royal Canadian Air Force Catalina flying boat decided to return to base. Suddenly, the navigator cried out; he had seen something on the horizon. The pilot banked and headed toward ...
