DESMOND KELLY

MESSAGE TO ALL LANKAN /AUSSIES – By Des Kelly I have written so much about Ceylon (then), Sri Lanka (now), it didn’t seem fair that not much was said about this great brown Land that so many of us Sri Lankans migrated to, and so many more are hoping to make their second home. Then, to the fore, he comes again, my good friend Max Gerreyn from W.A., one huge part of this Island Continent that CANNOT boast about being host to Corona Virus, unlike the other States, and especially Victoria, who let the bug in, and in turn, is now in the process of kicking it out.           Here, for each & everyone of our Lankan/Aussies, 8s a most interesting look at “STRALIA” which I hope you will enjoy. Thank you Max, for forwarding this to me. Always appreciated. ...

“UNCOMMON KNOWLEDGE” – By Des Kelly   I have always believed that “reading” is an education in itself. One can always end up in the most Senior Classes in School or College, enter top Universities around the planet, become Professors on various subjects and have Intelligence Quotas that hit the roof, yet still not know what is happening in this World of ours.   This being the case, it comes back to the fact that when something of this nature comes to us on the Internet, we READ & recoil in the sheer wonder of it all. It feels good to be able to share the knowledge with many thousands of people, in my case, especially with the members and readers of eLanka, a website that I am very happy & proud to be part of. Have to admit that I knew nothing of the subjects covered by this very interesting ...

A CANCER PATIENT SINGING WITH THE FAMOUS SINGER KEERTHI PASQUALE BEFORE HER DEATH –  REST IN PEACE – By Des Kelly   A very sad video indeed. This young doctor-to-be, dying of a brain tumour, and yet facing death so bravely, being helped up to sing (beautifully) on stage with one of Sri Lanka’s best, most compassionate entertainers, Keerthi Pasqual leaving most of her audience, and me, in tears, knowing that this was the last song she would sing before she died, and this, she did, leaving us all heartbroken. May she now rest in peace.   ...

“ISLAND IN THE SUN” – By Sarah Jameel (Introduction by Des Kelly) Although it has the identical title as a very popular song of old, this true story of Ceylon then/Sri Lanka now, as written by Sarah, and kindly forwarded to this writer, by the Editor of the Burgher Association of Melbourne, my good friend Neville Davidson, this would have to be one of the best, most nostalgic, endearing accounts of life, as we lived it, in My Lovely Island Home.  Excellently written, bringing  back so many precious memories, treasured moments that so many of us shared, before the reluctant exodus forced upon us by the powers that be, of a particular era, put an end to our enjoyment of the Island In The Sun, OUR Lovely Island Home aptly named Ceylon then, Sri Lanka now. ...

“A, B, C, & D VIRUS IS ON THE WAY” – By Des Kelly Alphabetically speaking, we will now have to concoct yet another one-word description for the above, because we’re sick & tired of hearing by-names like Coronavirus, Covid, Catastrophic, Unprecedented, & many other12 & 13 letter adjectives that seem to be around, ad-nauseam.           We will not be able to blame anyone for this particular Virus. It will certainly not be exclusively antagonistic in Victoria. Everyone over a certain age will cop it, no matter where they live. There are no vaccines pre-planned, as they are still working on one for the present Pandemic.    ...

The story behind The Sound of Silence – By Des Kelly This superb piece was sent to me by Max Gerreyn, who, like thousands of us loved the music of both Paul Simon and Art.Garfunkel and this is a fascinating account of just one of their huge hits. As the saying goes, sometimes, silence can be deafening, and this true story, although a bit sad at times, is quite definitely something that eLanka’s readers will absorb with interest.           Desmond Kelly.         (Editor-in -Chief) eLanka.   A long story but very touching It is one of the best-loved songs of all time. Simon & Garfunkel’s hit The Sound Of Silence topped the US charts and went platinum in the UK. It was named among the 20 most performed songs of the 20th century, included in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, ...

“TIME WAITS FOR NO MAN” – By Des Kelly      “If I could only turn back the clock”. How many times have we said this, mostly while looking into a bathroom mirror ?. Time changes everything, and no amount of effort to stop becoming who we are, in the context of time, is going to soften the effect of growing old. We may, of course, grow older gracefully, depending on how we spent our younger days, the only problem here being the fact that when young, most of us think, as a popular song states, “We will never grow old, while there’s love in our hearts”. We then look at the older people around us and actually feel sorry for them.    ...

“Boogie Woogie Baby” – By Des Kelly Her name was Rosalee, and there was this song written for her, by an ardent admirer no doubt. Micki Muster was his stage name and he was also a pianist who performed this dedication to Rosalee, everywhere he went, including Australia. In addition to being very pretty, Rosalee was also a dancer of no mean ability. I have decided to “post” this superb video on eLanka, to show everyone out there what dancing is all about. Featuring all the top dancers of our time, dancing to the backing of “Hey Rosalee”, and I promise that anyone who loves dancing of any sort will love to play this one, over and over again. Enjoy this one and remember all the greats like Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Vera Ellen & many others, dancing their hearts out for you. Please enjoy. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief)  eLanka.   ...

The story of Green Cabin – Introduction There were dozens of restaurants akin to the Green Cabin, but not many have so much history associated with “eating-places”, as this simply named little Cabin. Once again, Max Gerreyn has chosen to send me this most interesting story, which in turn, I would love to have all expatriates read if only to conjure up magic memories of the home that many of us had to leave, some, like your’s truly, very reluctantly.            A little added note here. I take this chance to thank everyone who send in their “stories” to eLanka. While we appreciate every effort, eLanka prefers to keep out of Politics & Religion based articles, as much as possible. We leave these things to the various Television Channels, and there are more than enough Social Media “scoops” out there right now, (even with a global ...

Grandpa’s Grandpass – (intro By Des Kelly)  This is a good one, ladies & gentlemen. One of the famous old “Areas” of Ceylon that all of us ex-patriots should remember.  Comes to me also, from a famous old Cartoonist friend, living now, in Perth, Australia. He needs no introduction and I am proud to call him a good friend.   His name is Maxwell Gerreyn, and he has written his own introduction to this interesting piece on old Ceylon.  Please read it. I feel certain that it will bring back many golden memories. ...
