A new palliative care centre in Sarasalai, Chavakachcheri, is offering free care to people facing advanced and life-limiting illnesses, with the Comfort Care Home formally opened on 24 October 2026 by Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa. Built at a cost of more than Rs. 350 million, the centre represents a substantial community effort, supported by local and overseas philanthropists and donors.

The facility has been established to provide comfort, relief from pain and emotional support to patients whose illnesses, including advanced cancer and organ failure, may no longer be curable. Its opening brings a dedicated palliative care service to the Jaffna District, with an approach centred on patients’ dignity and well-being as well as their clinical needs.

Care focused on comfort and dignity

Unlike conventional medical facilities, the Comfort Care Home is designed around the needs of people living with serious illness who require compassionate support. Its 20 private rooms provide a setting for patients to receive care, while pain management services, oxygen therapy and round-the-clock nursing are among the provisions available.

The centre also includes a spiritual garden intended to support patients’ mental well-being. Nutritious meals, planned according to medical recommendations, are provided as part of the service. All care and services at the home are offered completely free of charge.

The significance of that commitment is particularly clear for families caring for a loved one with a complex illness. Practical support, access to nursing care and attention to comfort can form an important part of the care experience, alongside medical treatment. The centre’s model recognises that patients’ needs extend beyond physical symptoms, and that emotional support and respect remain essential when a cure is no longer possible.

A project shaped by local and international generosity

The project was spearheaded by Dr. K. Devakanthan, a retired nephrologist who currently resides in the United States and serves as the founder and chairman of the Comfort Care Home. The centre was developed with financial support from philanthropists and donors in Sri Lanka and overseas, bringing together contributions in support of a dedicated care facility in the north.

A major contribution was made by the family of the late teacher Kanagasabai, who donated more than an acre of land required for the project. The donation provided the site on which the centre could be developed, while financial contributions from local and international supporters helped fund a facility built at a cost exceeding Rs. 350 million.

The story reflects a form of giving that connects professional experience, community commitment and generosity across borders. Dr. Devakanthan’s work as a retired nephrologist is closely connected to the purpose of the home, while his contribution from abroad underscores how Sri Lankans living overseas can remain engaged with community needs at home. The donated land and support from other philanthropists and donors were also instrumental in bringing the project to completion.

For Sri Lankan readers in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and the United States, the centre offers a clear example of how overseas connections can contribute to practical initiatives in Sri Lanka. This project was made possible through a combination of local and international support, and its free-of-charge model places the focus on the needs of patients and their families.

A wider role for palliative care

At the opening ceremony, Minister Jayatissa acknowledged that modern medicine has advanced considerably in treating disease, while recognising that some conditions cannot be cured. In such circumstances, he said, relieving pain and providing emotional comfort, dignity and compassionate care remain essential responsibilities of the healthcare system.

He also noted that palliative care facilities can ease the financial and emotional burden on families. By providing dedicated support for patients with serious illnesses, such centres may also allow government hospitals to use their resources more effectively for people requiring emergency treatment.

The Minister expressed hope that the Comfort Care Home could serve as a model for similar facilities in other parts of Sri Lanka, and pledged the Health Ministry’s support for the centre’s continued operation. His remarks placed the facility within a broader discussion of how health services can respond to patients’ needs when curative treatment is no longer possible, while maintaining the respect and care every person deserves.

The opening was attended by Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar, Northern Province Governor Nagalingam Vethanayahan, healthcare professionals, project founders and donors. Their presence reflected the range of people and institutions connected with the centre’s establishment and its place in the region’s care landscape.

A community resource for patients and families

The opening of the Comfort Care Home is a significant development for patients and families in the north. Its 20 private rooms, nursing care, pain management, oxygen therapy, medically recommended meals and spiritual garden bring together practical and personal aspects of support in a single facility. The promise that all services will be provided free of charge is central to its purpose.

For relatives, the availability of a dedicated centre may offer support during a period that can involve difficult decisions and considerable emotional strain. For patients, the facility is intended to provide a setting where comfort, well-being and dignity are given careful attention. The centre’s approach recognises that compassionate care remains important throughout an illness, including when the focus has shifted from cure to relief and support.

The Comfort Care Home is also a reminder of the value of collective effort. The contribution of Dr. Devakanthan, the land donated by the family of the late teacher Kanagasabai, and the financial support of local and international philanthropists and donors all helped establish a purpose-built facility in Jaffna District. Together, these contributions have created a community resource with the potential to support patients and families while offering an example for similar initiatives elsewhere in Sri Lanka.

For Sri Lankans around the world who follow community developments at home, the project is a noteworthy example of generosity translated into practical care. Its enduring value will be measured not only by the scale of the investment, but also by the comfort and dignity it provides to patients and families who need support.
