Cygnus House Clinches Championship at Lyceum Kurunegala Athletic Meet 2023/24

2 First Runners Up

In a display of sheer athleticism and determination, Cygnus House soared to victory at the Inter House Athletic Meet of Lyceum International School, Kurunegala for the fourth consecutive year. The event, held at the SLNG Playground, Kurunegala, witnessed intense competition among the houses of Aquila, Cetus, Cygnus, and Ursa.

Dr. Shilpa Fernando, a proud Lyceum athlete and 1st place winner of Discus Throw and Shot Putt events at the Junior National Athletic Championship, was the Chief Guest at the event. Mrs. Nayana Senevirathne, Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Sports (North Western Province), Mr. Sameera Hewage, Senior Executive Vice President (Sports, Fitness & Wellness innovation) at Lyceum Global Holdings, Mr. Nethan Wijesinghe, Principal of Lyceum International School, Panadura as well as principals from the Kurunegala area and the Lyceum school’s management, graced the event.

In a display of dominance, Cygnus House emerged victorious for the fourth consecutive year, clinching the championship with a total of 291 points. Cetus secured the runner-up position with 281 points, while Ursa claimed third place with 217 points, and Aquila followed with 190 points.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Chandana Basnayake, Principal of Lyceum International School, Kurunegala, emphasized the significance of sportsmanship, stating, “There was more than just a competition; the entire Lyceum Kurunegala community displayed sportsmanship beyond victory, showcasing commitment, joyfulness, togetherness, and unity enthusiastically. This embodies the core value of education.” He also expressed gratitude to parents for their understanding, cooperation, and support towards the success of the Lyceum Athletic Meet 2023.

The event also recognized individual achievements across various age groups, with winners in categories ranging from under 8 to under 16, for both girls and boys. 

– Under 8 Boys: Akindu Gihansa (Aquila) 

– Under 8 Girls : Shenalya Galappaththi (Aquila)

– Under 10 Boys: Pamod Bonula (Ursa)

– Under 10 Girls: Yelinsa Rajakaruna (Aquila)

– Under 12 Boys: Gayith Abeysinghe (Cygnus)

– Under 12 Girls: Senulya Dissanayake (Ursa)

– Under 14 Boys: Firdous Sajidh (Cygnus), Sajidur Rahman (Cygnus)

– Under 14 Girls: Pudamsa Imbulana (Cetus)

– Under 16 Boys: Gawesh Nanayakkara (Ursa), Ahmed Fahmy (Cetus)

– Under 16 Girls: Gawesha Dharmarathne (Cetus)

Adding to the festivities, the School Brass Band, Cultural Dancing team, Karate Display, Gymnastics Display and Drill Display mesmerized the audience with their captivating performances, further enhancing the spirit of unity and celebration during the Lyceum Kurunegala’s annual Athletic Meet 2023/2024.
