The Decision Review System (DRS), a technology-based aid used in cricket, was conceived by Senaka Weeraratna in 1997. Initially known as the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS), DRS combines television replays, ball-tracking technology, microphones, and infra-red imaging to assist match officials with decision making. It comprises both Umpire Reviews and Player Reviews, and was first introduced in Test matches in 2008, ODIs in January 2011, and in a Twenty20 International in October 2017.

A Game-Changer in Cricket

The International Cricket Council (ICC) initially made the use of DRS mandatory for all international matches. However, this was later revised to optional, requiring consent from both teams. Over the years, the rules and protocols for DRS, including LBW decisions and the number of unsuccessful reviews, have been updated and amended. The ICC continues to refine the system and its implementation.

The Impact of DRS in Recent Matches

One of the most recent instances of DRS in action was during the third T20I series match between Team India and Afghanistan. Indian batsman Rinku Singh was saved from dismissal by an inside edge detected by UltraEdge, a component of the DRS. The DRS decision sparked controversy and highlighted the system’s significance in the sport.

DRS Amidst the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about several logistical challenges in the cricketing world. To adapt, the ICC temporarily suspended the requirement for neutral match officials and increased the number of unsuccessful reviews per Test innings. The introduction of the ‘Umpire’s Call’ concept was another significant change, which aimed to honour the on-field umpire’s original decision in close situations.

DRS – A Boon or Bane?

Despite the debates and controversies surrounding DRS, it has generally been well-received. It has undeniably brought a level of technological sophistication to the sport, enhancing decision-making accuracy. The evolution of DRS is a testament to cricket’s adaptability and willingness to embrace change in the pursuit of fairness and improvement.
