There had been a 10% increase in remittances from the expatriate Sri Lankan workers, in September, compared to the previous month, Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara said.

Statistics released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), on Saturday, showed that workers’ remittances increased to 359 million US dollars in September 2022, from 325 million US dollars in August.Compared to July 2022, workers remittances have increased by 29 percent. This is an increase of 80 million US dollars between July and September.

However, workers’ remittances in the first nine months of 2022 were still 43 percent lower than the remittances in 2021, the Central Bank said.Last week, the Governor of the Central Bank Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe said that foreign remittances had increased steadily in the past few months due to the monetary policies they introduced.  (RK)
