Hiriketiya Beach — The Hidden Jewel at the Bottom of Sri Lanka-by Dr Harold Gunatillake

Hello Viewers,
Today, I’m excited to share my wonderful trip to Hiriketiya Beach in southern Sri Lanka with you.
Tucked into a perfect crescent bay at the very south of Sri Lanka, just 10 minutes from Dikwella and 20 minutes from Tangalle, Hiriketiya is the spot everyone’s talking about — but somehow it still feels like a secret.
Why Hiriketiya is so alluring
- Let’s talk more about this Bay.
Picture this: a horseshoe-shaped cove with palm trees leaning over golden sand, turquoise water so clear you can see your feet, and not a single high-rise in sight. It’s small, it’s intimate, and it’s stunning from the moment you arrive.
It’s a surf experience that’s perfect for everyone!
This is one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka for learning to surf and experiencing it.
On the Right side: Gentle, peeling waves — perfect for beginners and first-timers. Left side: Faster, hollower waves for intermediates who want a bit more thrill.
Local surf schools and board rentals are right on the beach so that you can go from zero to riding waves in one afternoon.
Now, here’s the vibe!
Chill, barefoot, and creative. Think cliffside cafes with smoothie bowls, yoga decks at sunrise, beach bars with fire shows at night, and backpackers +
families + digital nomads all mixing. No cars on the sand. Just music, waves, and sunsets.
Now, let’s explore Beyond the Beach together!
Walk up the headland for the best view of the entire bay. Stay for sunset — the sky turns pink over the coconut trees, and it feels like the whole world slows down.
Experience it.
Hiriketiya isn’t loud. It isn’t crowded. It’s real.
Come to learn to surf. Come to swim in safe water. Come to eat fresh curry, sip king coconut, and watch the stars with no light pollution.
This is Hiriketiya—one of Sri Lanka’s most alluring spots.
Come and experience this unique bay— where the waves teach you, and the place keeps you.
