important pilgrimage site for Buddhists in Sri Lanka – Katharagama kirivehera – By Malsha – eLanka

Katharagama Kirivehera is a Buddhist temple located in the town of Katharagama in Sri Lanka. It is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and some Christians. The temple is dedicated to Skanda-Murugan, the Hindu war god, who is also venerated as a Buddhist deity in Sri Lanka.

The history of the temple dates back to ancient times, and it is believed to have been a place of worship for over 2,000 years. According to legend, Skanda-Murugan, who is also known as Kataragama Deviyo in Sri Lanka, appeared at this location to fulfill the wishes of his devotees.

The temple complex is spread over a large area and includes several buildings and shrines. The main shrine houses a statue of Skanda-Murugan, and there are also shrines dedicated to other deities such as Ganesh, Vishnu, and Shiva.

The temple is famous for its annual festival, known as the Esala Perahera, which is held in July or August each year. The festival attracts large crowds of devotees who come to witness the colorful parades and processions, which feature dancers, musicians, and elaborately decorated elephants.

Overall, Katharagama Kirivehera is an important cultural and religious site in Sri Lanka, and it is worth visiting to experience the rich history and vibrant culture of the region.

Katharagama Kirivehera is located in the town of Katharagama, which is situated in the southeastern part of Sri Lanka. The town is located in the Hambantota District of the Southern Province, approximately 228 kilometers from the capital city of Colombo.

The temple complex is situated on the banks of the Menik Ganga, a major river in Sri Lanka that flows through the southeastern part of the country. The area around the temple is characterized by low-lying plains and hills, and the climate is generally hot and dry, with temperatures often reaching over 30 degrees Celsius.

The region is also known for its wildlife, and the nearby Yala National Park is one of the country’s most popular wildlife reserves, home to a wide variety of animals including elephants, leopards, and crocodiles.

The town of Katharagama is also an important pilgrimage site for Hindus, and there are several other Hindu temples located in the area, including the Kiri Vehera Hindu Kovil, which is situated just a short distance from the Kirivehera Buddhist temple.

Overall, the geography of Katharagama Kirivehera is characterized by its location in a hot and dry region, its proximity to the Menik Ganga river, and its position as an important cultural and religious site in Sri Lanka.

Katharagama Kirivehera is a significant Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka because it is dedicated to Skanda-Murugan, a deity who is highly venerated by both Buddhists and Hindus in Sri Lanka. Skanda-Murugan is considered a god of war and is often depicted holding a spear or lance, symbolizing his ability to vanquish evil forces.

In Sri Lankan Buddhism, Skanda-Murugan is often regarded as a Bodhisattva, a being who has attained enlightenment but chooses to remain in the world to help others. As such, he is seen as a powerful protector and a bringer of good fortune.

According to legend, the temple at Katharagama was built over 2,000 years ago and was originally a place of worship for both Buddhists and Hindus. Over time, the site became more closely associated with the worship of Skanda-Murugan, and the temple was eventually established as a Buddhist shrine.

Today, Katharagama Kirivehera is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists in Sri Lanka, who come to offer prayers and make offerings to Skanda-Murugan. The temple is particularly busy during the annual Esala Perahera festival, which is one of the most important events in the Buddhist calendar in Sri Lanka.

Overall, Katharagama Kirivehera is a significant Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka because of its association with Skanda-Murugan, a deity who is highly revered by Buddhists and Hindus alike, and its long history as a place of pilgrimage and worship.
