Lakshman Kadirgamar is truly one of the most extraordinary Sri Lankans of our time. His sharp mind, dedication, and steadfast loyalty to the nation raised him to international recognition. As we remembered the 21st anniversary of his passing on August 12th with a heartfelt almsgiving ceremony organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,

I couldn’t help but reflect not only on his public accomplishments but also on the personal memories I hold dear from our youth.

A wonderfully sharp mind nurtured by a love for law and a passion for learning, inspiring everyone around with its brilliance.

Kadirgamar’s reputation as one of Sri Lanka’s finest legal minds was well earned. His mastery of the law was not merely academic; it was analytical, strategic, and deeply humane.

He possessed a rare ability to distil complex issues into clear, compelling arguments. This skill later made him one of the most effective Foreign Ministers the country has ever had.

His time at Oxford, where he served as President of the Oxford Union in 1958–59, added polish to an already formidable intellect. He often joked about his journey, saying, “The cake was baked in Sri Lanka, and the icing was done in Oxford.”

It was a line he once shared at a Trinity College OBA event, reminding his audience that excellence is earned, not inherited.

“There is nothing called a free meal; you have to work for it,” he said — a philosophy he lived by.

A Foreign Minister Who Truly Excels in Efficiency

As Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 2001, and again from April 2004 until his tragic assassination in August 2005,

Kadirgamar truly transformed Sri Lanka’s diplomatic approach. His sharp intelligence and strategic insight shone through in every initiative he embraced.

He worked to strengthen international partnerships, giving Sri Lanka a stronger voice on global stages, and he dedicated himself to fighting extremism through peaceful diplomacy rather than harsh rhetoric.

He was remarkably effective — not just quick or decisive, but truly purposeful. Every step he took was rooted in thorough knowledge, thoughtful preparation, and a sincere dedication to securing the nation’s long-term stability.

Memories from Colombo University: The Beginning of a Friendship

My own memories of Kadirgamar stretch back long before his rise to national prominence.

We first met in 1950 at the University of Ceylon, Colombo, during practice sessions for the freshman’s meet on the grounds near Turret Road.

Those were simple, energetic days — running, resting, chatting, and discovering the beginnings of a friendship.

He was an impressive 400-yard hurdler, tall and strong, with powerful legs built for rhythm and endurance.

I, being shorter, focused on the 100-yard sprint. We trained together, encouraged each other, and shared the easy camaraderie of youth.

Those afternoons remain vivid in my mind — the laughter, the sweat, the sense of possibility.

Life took us on different paths, and we lost touch for a time. But fate brought us together again years later at one of Sam Wijesinghe’s birthday celebrations at Lak Mahal in Colpetty.

The moment we met, the years melted away. We spoke at length about our university days, our friends, and the journeys we had taken. It was a warm, unexpected reunion — one I cherish deeply.

A life that was sadly shortened, but their legacy continues to inspire us all.

His assassination in 2005 was a devastating loss for Sri Lanka. It robbed the nation of a statesman of rare calibre — a man whose intelligence, integrity, and diplomatic skill were unmatched.

His death was not only unfortunate; it was a tragedy that altered the course of our country’s political and diplomatic landscape. Yet, even in death, his legacy continues to guide us. His work ethic, his clarity of thought, his devotion to Sri Lanka, and his belief in disciplined excellence remain powerful examples for future generations.

Remembering a truly remarkable man, whose life story inspires us all. His kindness, courage, and wisdom continue to touch the hearts of everyone around him. Let’s cherish his memory and strive to embody his remarkable qualities every day.

Looking back on Lakshman Kadirgamar — the dedicated student-athlete, the talented lawyer, the dedicated statesman, and the genuine friend — I feel genuinely inspired by his incredible life.

He always carried himself with grace, spoke thoughtfully, and made every action count. His character and intellect truly defined him.

Sri Lanka was truly blessed to have him, and I feel so grateful to have known him.
