The LSR Colombo Marathon, one of Sri Lanka’s longest-established international sporting events, celebrated its 20th edition on Sunday, 4 October 2026, with more than 1,400 participants representing Sri Lanka and 33 countries, including approximately 150 international runners.

Organised by Lanka Sportreizen (LSR), the event has developed into an important fixture in Sri Lanka’s sporting calendar while also serving as a significant initiative to promote the island as a destination for active holidays, recreational activities and sports tourism. Its latest edition demonstrated that a well-established sporting event can connect international participation with local athletic achievement, while presenting Sri Lanka through a broader and more dynamic tourism profile.

A marathon established to show another side of Sri Lanka

The LSR Colombo Marathon was founded with a clear vision: to showcase Sri Lanka beyond its traditional image as a sun-and-sand holiday destination and to highlight the country’s potential for activity-based travel, long-distance running and organised recreation.

Its history dates back to 1998, when the inaugural event was held at the historic Galle Dutch Fort. That first edition attracted 28 foreign runners and 328 Sri Lankan participants, establishing the foundations of an event that would subsequently travel through several of the island’s best-known locations, including Galle, Negombo, Kandy, Dambulla and Colombo.

In 2004, the event was renamed the LSR Colombo Marathon, following the established convention of internationally recognised city marathons. It was later recognised by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races and became part of the international long-distance running calendar.

The marathon’s popularity grew considerably over the years, with participation reaching nearly 8,500 runners in 2017. Its scale demonstrated the capacity of Sri Lanka to host a large, professionally organised international road-running event, while its changing routes allowed participants to experience the island’s varied urban, historic and coastal environments.

A significant revival after a difficult period

Following the 2018 edition, the event could not take place from 2019 onwards because of the difficult circumstances prevailing in the country. Its absence created a substantial gap in Sri Lanka’s international sporting calendar, particularly for athletes and recreational runners who had come to regard the race as an important annual challenge.

LSR revived the marathon in 2025 with a successful 19th edition, restoring an event that had contributed to the promotion of Sri Lanka as a destination for sports and recreational travel. The 2026 edition therefore represented more than a numerical milestone: it confirmed the marathon’s successful return and demonstrated the continuing value of maintaining internationally oriented sporting events in Sri Lanka.

The participation of more than 1,400 runners in the 20th edition, exceeding the initial expectation of approximately 1,000 participants, provided a positive indication of the event’s renewed appeal. Athletes from 33 countries, together with a strong contingent of Sri Lankan runners, created a competition that was international in character while remaining firmly connected to the local sporting community.

A route connecting Colombo and Negombo

The Full Marathon began at the Traffic Light Junction in the vicinity of the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo 7.

From the starting point, the 42.195-kilometre route passed through Borella, Dematagoda, Peliyagoda, Wattala, Pamunugama, Thalahena, Pitipana and Duwa before concluding at Negombo Beach Park.

The course provided a distinctive geographical experience, moving from the Colombo metropolitan area through established suburbs and Western Province communities before reaching the Negombo coastline. For international runners, the route offered an opportunity to experience a cross-section of Sri Lankan urban and coastal surroundings, while local competitors were able to contest a demanding course that combined distance, changing scenery and a memorable seaside finish.

The event included four categories:

  • Full Marathon – 42.195 km
  • Half Marathon – 21.097 km
  • 10 km Fun Run
  • 5 km Fun Run

The Full and Half Marathons included Open and Veteran categories for men and women, while the shorter Fun Run categories provided accessible opportunities for participants with different levels of experience and fitness.

Kenyan victory and strong Sri Lankan representation

The men’s Full Marathon was won by Kenyan runner Elias Nyaga Muthoni, who completed the distance in 2:18:18. Meshack Mbugua Nderitu of Kenya finished second in 2:20:07, while E. AUC Rupasinghe of Sri Lanka secured third place in 2:24:08.

The result represented a strong showing by Sri Lankan distance running, with Rupasinghe earning a place on the overall podium in a highly competitive international field.

The women’s Full Marathon was won by Muthee Joyce Wanjugu of Malaysia in 2:47:16. Kingori Ziporah Wanjiru of Malaysia finished second in 2:56:07, followed by Caroline Cherono of Kenya in third place with a time of 3:05:02.

The Veteran Men’s Full Marathon produced another notable Sri Lankan result, with R. M. C. P. Perera taking first place in 4:30:35. Australia’s Graeme Andrew Webber finished second in 4:31:57, while Sri Lankan competitor Susantha Fernando placed third in 4:43:05.

Australia was also represented at the top of the Veteran Women’s Full Marathon category, which was won by Carole Chapman in 4:08:00. The performances by Webber and Chapman added an important international dimension for Australian readers and reflected the broad age range and continuing appeal of the event.

Sri Lankan runners dominate the Half Marathon podiums

The men’s Half Marathon was won by K. H. M. Sarath Kumara of Sri Lanka in 1:09:06. Waththe Vidanalage Madura finished second in 1:09:46, followed by R. M. S. Pushpa Kumara in 1:11:19.

The women’s Half Marathon also produced an entirely Sri Lankan podium. Gwon Fonseka won the category in 1:27:07, with W. M. Nimesha Nidarshani second in 1:31:05 and Kansawage Shashikala Dils third in 1:38:20.

These results underlined the depth of local participation across both the Full and Half Marathon distances. While the international field strengthened the event’s global standing, the achievements of Sri Lankan runners demonstrated that the marathon also continues to provide a valuable platform for domestic athletes.

Sport, travel and the future of Sri Lanka’s tourism profile

The 20th LSR Colombo Marathon has reinforced the potential of sports tourism as an important part of Sri Lanka’s broader visitor economy. International runners typically require accommodation, transport, meals, training facilities and time to explore the host destination, meaning that an event of this nature can support a range of businesses beyond the race itself.

The marathon also presents Sri Lanka through a perspective that differs from conventional holiday marketing. Rather than focusing only on beaches, heritage sites or resort experiences, the event places endurance, recreation, community participation and active travel at the centre of the country’s international profile.

For Sri Lankan expatriates and visitors from Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and other countries, events such as the LSR Colombo Marathon offer an opportunity to combine sporting participation with a personal connection to Sri Lanka. The presence of Australian veteran competitors, alongside runners from 32 other countries, illustrates how international sporting occasions can create meaningful links between Sri Lanka and the wider global Sri Lankan community.

The successful revival in 2025 and the milestone 20th edition in 2026 suggest that the LSR Colombo Marathon remains an instrumental platform for promoting Sri Lanka as a destination for active holidays and professionally organised recreational events. With sustained investment in planning, international promotion and athlete services, the marathon’s untapped potential could be developed further, strengthening both its sporting reputation and its contribution to Sri Lanka’s tourism offering.

The 2026 event, organised by Lanka Sportreizen, therefore marked not only 20 editions of long-distance running, but also the continuation of a distinctive national vision: that Sri Lanka can be experienced, celebrated and promoted through movement, competition and shared participation.
