Nil Diya Pokuna: The Hidden Underground Pond of Sri Lanka-by Kalani-eLanka

Nildiya Pokuna-eLanka 01

Nil Diya Pokuna, which translates to “Blue Water Pond,” is a mysterious and captivating underground cave system located near Ella in Sri Lanka. Renowned for its surreal beauty and historical significance, Nil Diya Pokuna is not only a natural wonder but also holds cultural and archaeological importance that has piqued the interest of adventurers and historians alike.

Nil Diya Pokuna is situated in the lush, mountainous region of central Sri Lanka, within close proximity to Ella, a popular tourist destination. The site is accessible through a moderate hike that takes visitors through thick forests, misty hills, and rocky terrains. However, reaching the actual underground pond is an adventurous journey. The cave’s entrance is a small opening, requiring visitors to descend into the earth using ropes and other climbing gear. Due to the complexity and dangers involved, it is highly recommended that only experienced cavers or those with professional guidance attempt to visit.

Nil Diya Pokuna is believed to have historical ties to King Ravana, a mythical figure from Sri Lankan folklore. According to legend, it is said that King Ravana, who ruled over Lanka during ancient times, used this underground pond as a secret passage or hiding place. The cave’s intricate structure and deep tunnels have sparked much speculation about its use during ancient times, possibly as an escape route or water source.

One of the most significant features of the cave is its deep, crystal-clear pond that remains hidden within the dark chambers of the cave system. The stillness of the water, combined with the reflection of light when torches are used, gives the pond an otherworldly blue hue, which is why it was named “Nil Diya” or “Blue Water.”

The exploration of Nil Diya Pokuna requires careful navigation, as the cave can be treacherous with steep drops, narrow pathways, and water-filled tunnels. However, those who venture inside are rewarded with an awe-inspiring sight. The underground pond, surrounded by smooth rock formations, is a hidden gem that remains undisturbed, adding to its enigmatic appeal.

One of the unique aspects of Nil Diya Pokuna is its unexplored potential. Even today, parts of the cave system remain uncharted, with many mysteries still locked in its depths. This element of the unknown attracts thrill-seekers and archaeologists alike, hoping to uncover the secrets buried within.

Nil Diya Pokuna is not just a natural wonder but also an environmentally sensitive area. It is crucial for visitors to practice responsible tourism to preserve the site’s pristine condition. Littering, vandalism, or disturbing the natural ecosystem can lead to the degradation of this fragile environment. Due to its growing popularity, there have been efforts to regulate and limit the number of visitors, ensuring that the cave system remains protected for future generations.

Nil Diya Pokuna stands as one of Sri Lanka’s most fascinating hidden gems, offering both natural beauty and a connection to the island’s ancient history. Its mysterious underground pond and intriguing legends continue to captivate those who visit. For adventurers seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience, Nil Diya Pokuna promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of Sri Lanka’s underground wonders.
