One Step at a Time for Sri Lanka – Sash Jayasinghe’s Inspiring 4Lanka Mission to Unite a Nation – 1,400km around Sri Lanka’s coastline, starting 1 July 2027 – by eLanka

A remarkable young man of Sri Lankan heritage is setting out to prove that determination, courage and a love for one’s motherland can bring communities together and inspire a new generation.
At just 22 years of age, Sash Jayasinghe, born in Rome and raised in London to Sri Lankan parents, has embarked on an ambitious mission that goes far beyond personal fitness or sporting achievement.
His initiative, 4Lanka – One Step At A Time, centres on an extraordinary challenge: running around Sri Lanka while spreading a message of unity, hope, cultural connection and personal determination.
For Sash, this is not simply about the distance covered or the physical endurance required. It is about celebrating his Sri Lankan heritage, honouring the sacrifices of his parents and inspiring people from all walks of life to believe in their own potential.
A Journey Inspired by Family, Heritage and Gratitude
Like many young people growing up within the Sri Lankan diaspora, Sash experienced the challenges of balancing different cultures while searching for his own identity.
Although born in Italy and raised in Britain, his connection to Sri Lanka remained deeply personal.
His parents worked tirelessly to provide their family with opportunities and a better future. It was during a visit to Sri Lanka as a teenager that Sash began to fully appreciate those sacrifices.
Seeing the lives of young people in Sri Lanka, many of whom faced challenges and had fewer opportunities than he enjoyed overseas, gave him a new perspective on life.
That experience became a turning point.
Rather than simply appreciating the opportunities he had been given, Sash wanted to do something meaningful to honour his parents and contribute to the country that shaped his family’s story.
From that determination, the vision for 4Lanka was born.

4Lanka – More Than Just a Run
Running around an entire country is an extraordinary undertaking, demanding physical preparation, mental strength and unwavering commitment.
But for Sash, the greater ambition lies beyond the finish line.
Through 4Lanka, he hopes to encourage people throughout Sri Lanka to come together regardless of their ethnic, religious or cultural backgrounds.
His vision embraces Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher and other communities, alongside Sri Lankans living overseas.
It is a powerful reminder that while Sri Lankans may have different backgrounds and experiences, they share a connection to an island rich in history, culture, resilience and human potential.
Sash hopes his journey will demonstrate that unity can begin with something as simple as a shared purpose and the willingness to take that first step.
Reconnecting the Sri Lankan Diaspora with Their Roots
One particularly inspiring aspect of Sash’s mission is his desire to reconnect young Sri Lankans living overseas with their ancestral homeland.
For many second- and third-generation Sri Lankans growing up in countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and New Zealand, maintaining a meaningful connection with Sri Lanka can sometimes be challenging.
Sash understands this experience firsthand.
His longer-term vision includes establishing community running clubs across Sri Lanka, encouraging healthier lifestyles and creating opportunities for friendship, personal development and connection.
He also hopes to organise retreats that will allow young members of the Sri Lankan diaspora to visit the island, experience its culture and develop a deeper understanding of their heritage.
These ambitions could give 4Lanka a lasting purpose well beyond the original running challenge.

Turning Personal Challenges into Positive Change
Sash’s journey has not been without personal difficulties.
He has spoken openly about periods of uncertainty, self-doubt and struggles to find direction in his younger years.
However, rather than allowing those experiences to define his future, he has chosen to transform them into motivation.
His philosophy encourages young people to discover their own purpose, pursue meaningful ambitions and become a positive influence in the lives of others.
Through 4Lanka, he hopes to demonstrate that extraordinary achievements often begin with one courageous decision.
It is a message that resonates particularly strongly with young people who may be uncertain about their future or hesitant to pursue their dreams.
A Wonderful Example for Young Sri Lankans Worldwide
At eLanka, we are always delighted to highlight the achievements and inspiring initiatives of Sri Lankans and people of Sri Lankan heritage across the world.
Sash Jayasinghe’s 4Lanka initiative represents something particularly meaningful.
It demonstrates that being part of the Sri Lankan diaspora is not simply about remembering where our families came from. It can also mean finding new and creative ways to contribute to the country and its people.
Whether through education, entrepreneurship, sport, community service or initiatives such as 4Lanka, young Sri Lankans have tremendous potential to make a difference.
Sash’s ambition is a wonderful example of how personal determination and cultural pride can come together in pursuit of something much greater than individual success.
