The landscape of higher education and technological research in South Asia has reached a remarkable juncture as the Faculty of Computing at the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) officially announces the elevation of its flagship academic gathering. The International Conference on Advancements in Computing (ICAC) is set to convene for its eighth consecutive iteration from the 9th to the 10th of December 2026 at the SLIIT Malabe campus. More importantly, this year’s symposium marks a momentous institutional transition: ICAC has been elevated to a fully sponsored IEEE International Conference, cementing its status as a premier global forum for scholarly exchange and technological innovation.

For institutions across the island and within the broader global Sri Lankan community, this upgrade represents far more than a mere procedural shift in organizational backing. It stands as a testament to seven years of rigorous academic perseverance, meticulous peer review, and an unwavering commitment to elevating local research standards to international prominence.

From Technical Co-Sponsorship to Global Endorsement

Since its inception in 2019, ICAC has served as a vital intellectual incubator, quietly championing the freshest ideas in computing, software engineering, and information technology. During its formative years spanning from 2019 through 2025, the conference operated under the technical co-sponsorship of IEEE Sri Lanka. While this prior arrangement provided substantial credibility and ensured rigorous academic standards, the new designation for 2026 reflects full IEEE sponsorship, an endorsement that places ICAC among an elite tier of internationally recognized academic symposia.

This evolution is rooted in a rich institutional history. ICAC itself traces its lineage back to the National Conference on Technology & Management, a pioneering forum that ran successfully for a decade at SLIIT before undergoing a strategic rebranding in 2019 to better address the rapid paradigms of the digital age. Remarkably, the conference has maintained an uninterrupted annual schedule since its inception, demonstrating exceptional institutional resilience, including the successful pivot to fully virtual formats during the global disruptions of 2020 and 2021.

Seven Years of Scholarly Excellence and Global Impact

To fully appreciate the magnitude of this year’s IEEE sponsorship, one must examine the empirical trajectory of ICAC over its first seven completed editions. Between 2019 and 2025, the conference catalogued more than 600 peer-reviewed research papers, all of which are indexed in prestigious repositories such as IEEE Xplore and Scopus. These contributions have attracted over 1,000 cumulative participants from across academia, government, and industry sectors.

Furthermore, the academic rigor of ICAC has been enriched by more than 20 distinguished keynote and invited speakers. These luminaries have traveled from or represented world-class institutions, including the University of Auckland, Imperial College London, Middlesex University London, and Kyushu University. Through these high-level engagements, ICAC has fostered an environment where local scholars, postgraduate students, and international delegates can engage in robust intellectual discourse.

The academic footprint of the conference is further quantified by its Google Scholar h-index of 16, a clear indicator of the citation impact and widespread relevance of the published literature. Spanning anywhere from 11 to 17 specialized research tracks each year, ranging from artificial intelligence and cybersecurity to computer vision, the Internet of Things (IoT), and quantum computing, ICAC consistently addresses the most pressing technological frontiers of our era.

Amplifying SLIIT’s Broader Research Trajectory

The elevation of ICAC 2026 occurs in tandem with a broader, upward trajectory in research output across SLIIT as a whole. Today, the institution produces in excess of 300 Scopus-indexed papers annually. This prolific academic output has propelled SLIIT to secure a joint-third position among all universities in Sri Lanka, both state-funded and private, in the prestigious Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. This achievement marks the highest ranking ever attained by a private tertiary educational institution in the country, underscoring a transformative shift in higher education excellence.

In addition to institutional rankings, individual faculty members and researchers affiliated with SLIIT continue to garner global recognition. Several scientists from the institute have been distinguished among the world’s top 2% of scientists in the authoritative Stanford–Elsevier citation metrics rankings. Such accolades reflect a institutional culture that prioritizes cutting-edge research, pedagogical innovation, and tangible contributions to global scientific knowledge.

Looking Ahead: ICAC 2026

As preparations for the December 9–10, 2026 conference gather momentum, the organizing committee anticipates an unprecedented volume of high-caliber submissions from academics, doctoral candidates, and industry practitioners worldwide.
