The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting last week approved a proposal to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Sri Lanka Police and the Australian Federal Police towards strengthening bilateral law enforcement ties.

Addressing the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa on Tuesday said the agreement aims to deepen collaboration in the fight against a range of transnational and organised crimes, including terrorism, cybercrime, drug and human trafficking and smuggling.

He said the MoU will establish a formal framework for cooperation between the two law enforcement agencies. The initiative reflects a shared commitment of both nations to address increasingly complex and cross-border security threats through joint action and mutual support.

Under the proposed agreement, Sri Lanka Police and the Australian Federal Police will facilitate enhanced coordination in the prevention, investigation and enforcement of transnational crimes. It will also encourage regular information sharing, exchange of best practices and knowledge and joint capacity development programs to boost operational effectiveness.

The proposal to this effect presented by Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
