In a significant stride towards the modernisation of the national healthcare infrastructure, the Ministry of Health and Mass Media has officially commenced a monumental Rs. 1.2 billion initiative designed to drastically enhance cardiac diagnostic and interventional capabilities across several premier state medical institutions. This strategic investment, which involves the installation of four state-of-the-art cardiac catheterisation laboratory (cath lab) units, underscores a profound institutional commitment to decentralising advanced cardiovascular care and ensuring that the Global Sri Lankan community and residents alike have access to world-class medical facilities within the public sector.

The programme, which was meticulously organised under the direct instructions of the Minister of Health and Mass Media, Nalinda Jayatissa, aims to address the historically long waiting lists for heart disease treatments by deploying cutting-edge technology that facilitates faster, more accurate clinical interventions. Each of the four newly commissioned units is valued at approximately Rs. 300 million, reflecting the high-calibre nature of the equipment being introduced to the national grid to assist in the fight against non-communicable diseases, which remain a primary health concern for the nation.

A New Era of AI-Driven Cardiac Diagnostics

At the heart of this technological upgrade is the acquisition of the Canon Alphenix Core+ Evolve Edition cardiac catheterisation systems, which are renowned globally for their integration of artificial intelligence and advanced imaging protocols. These systems represent a departure from traditional diagnostic tools, as they are replete with sophisticated AI algorithms that assist medical professionals in making real-time, data-driven decisions during complex coronary interventions.

By utilizing advanced imaging, these cath labs enable surgeons and cardiologists to perform minimally invasive procedures with a degree of precision that was previously difficult to achieve in standard environments. The implementation of this AI technology is expected to significantly shorten the duration of interventional procedures, thereby improving the overall workflow within the hospital’s cardiovascular wings and allowing for a higher volume of patients to be treated with greater efficiency and safety.

Strategic Deployment Across Key State Hospitals

The distribution of these units has been strategically planned to ensure broad geographical coverage, thereby reducing the necessity for patients to travel vast distances for specialist heart care. The installation schedule, as mandated by the Ministry, begins at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital on June 27, 2026, marking a pivotal moment for the Northern Province’s healthcare capacity. This will be followed by the commissioning of a unit at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital in Kalubowila on June 30, 2026.

The final phase of this immediate rollout will conclude at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL) in Colombo on July 2, 2026, where two separate units will be installed to bolster the capacity of the country’s largest medical facility. The simultaneous presence of multiple medical images on a single high-definition monitor within these new labs will empower clinical teams to observe complex vascular structures from various angles, ultimately reducing the procedural risks associated with heart and vascular diseases.

Enhancing Patient Outcomes and Reducing Surgical Strain

One of the most instrumental benefits of this Rs. 1.2 billion project is the transition towards minimally invasive care, which serves as a modern antithesis to more traditional and invasive open-heart surgeries. By facilitating procedures that require smaller incisions and offer quicker recovery times, the Ministry of Health is effectively modernising the patient experience while simultaneously alleviating the strain on surgical theatres and post-operative care units.

The introduction of the Canon Alphenix Core+ Evolve Edition systems is expected to result in significantly improved clinical outcomes, as the high-resolution imaging reduces the margin for error during delicate vascular stenting and balloon angioplasty procedures. For the Global Sri Lankan community who look towards their homeland with a desire for progress and excellence, these developments represent a tangible evolution in the state’s ability to provide high-quality, equitable healthcare to all citizens regardless of their economic standing.

As eLanka continues to share and celebrate positive stories about Sri Lankans worldwide, this initiative serves as a shining example of how innovation and investment can converge to save lives and strengthen the nation’s social fabric.
