Established in 1968, the International Chemistry Olympiad remains the premier global competition for secondary school students possessing an extraordinary passion and advanced aptitude for chemical sciences. The 58th iteration of this eminent event brought together more than 360 of the brightest young minds from 96 countries across the globe, challenging participants through rigorous theoretical examinations and complex laboratory practicals that test both intellectual depth and empirical precision.

A Triumph of Rigorous Preparation and National Talent

The path to international recognition was forged through an exacting national selection process administered by the Sri Lanka National Chemistry Olympiad (SLNChO) competition, which is meticulously organised by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon. Following exhaustive national preliminary rounds, the top-performing secondary students were selected to undergo intensive, advanced training programs encompassing both theoretical chemistry and experimental laboratory techniques.

The brilliant young minds who proudly represented Sri Lanka and earned bronze medals on this international platform are:

  • Senitha Senaratne of Ananda College
  • Himaru Abeygunarathne of Trinity College
  • Geethilihansa Dharmarathna of Visakha Vidyalaya
  • Ravindu Ranatunga of Maliyadeva College

Each of these exceptional students demonstrated exemplary mastery over complex chemical principles, navigating challenging examinations designed to evaluate high-level problem-solving capacities and meticulous laboratory competence. Their success serves as a powerful testament to the caliber of secondary science education available in Sri Lanka and reinforces the country’s capability to produce world-class scientific talent.

Dedicated Mentorship and Institutional Excellence

Behind every remarkable academic milestone lies a foundation of steadfast institutional support and dedicated mentorship. The Sri Lankan delegation was expertly guided throughout the competition by esteemed academic mentors Dr. Upul Ranjan Kumarasinghe of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Dr. Chinthaka Nadun Ratnaweera of the University of Ruhuna, whose unwavering commitment ensured the students were thoroughly prepared for the rigorous demands of the global arena.

Furthermore, critical infrastructure and resources were generously provided by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, alongside its Council and the College of Chemical Sciences, which opened their state-of-the-art laboratories to facilitate comprehensive pre-competition training. Such institutional backing is instrumental in fostering an environment where young scholars can transcend domestic boundaries and test their mettle against international peers.

The success of the national team was also fortified by the tireless voluntary service and expertise of the Sri Lanka Olympiad Committee. Special appreciation is extended to Prof. Ireshika de Silva, Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Olympiad Committee, alongside committee members Dr. Chinthaka Rathnaweera, Prof. Laksiri Weerasinghe, Dr. Upul R. Kumarasinghe, Dr. Kushan Weerasiri, Dr. Dilhan Manawadu, Prof. Jayagika Dahanayake, and Dr. Sashiprabha Vithanarachchi. Additional invaluable mentorship and guidance throughout the rigorous training regimen were provided by Prof. Hasini Perera, Dr. Dumindu Siriwardena, Dr. Dumindu Premachandra, Dr. Pathum Weerawarna, and Adeepa Lakshan.

Inspiring Future Generations of Scientists

The achievements of these four young medalists have been met with immense pride and celebration by educators, parents, and well-wishers across Sri Lanka and among expatriate communities abroad. As these talented scholars return home bearing international honors, they carry with them invaluable experience that will undoubtedly propel future scientific and technological advancements within the nation.

By consistently raising the national flag at prestigious international forums, Sri Lankan students continue to prove that intellectual curiosity and dedication know no geographical bounds. The 58th International Chemistry Olympiad has not only commemorated individual excellence but has also underscored the imperative need for continued investment in STEM education, advanced research facilities, and mentorship networks that empower the next generation of scientific leaders.
