relaxing and fun, not scary.

Passing 22A ‘great victory for those who value democracy: Karu Jayasuriya

Daily Mirror. lk
The passing of the 22nd amendment to the Constitution was a victory for all citizens of Sri Lanka who value democracy, National Movement for Social Justice Chairman Karu Jayasuriya said today.

“We, the National Movement for Social Justice, would like to first and foremost thank all members of parliament as well as civil and political forces who continuously advocated forthis constitutional reform,” he said. He said the parliament of Sri Lanka today passed the 22nd Amendment by revoking the 20th amendment to the constitution, which had been adopted to convert the country to an autocratic, authoritarian regime.

“We, as an organisation that vehemently opposed 20A when it was introduced to achieve the aspirations of the former President and even after it was adopted, we emphasise once again that we do not believe that the 22nd amendment is sufficient and the last decisive step to secure the country’s democracy and protect the dignity and expectations of the people,” a statement issued by the National Movement for Social Justice said.

“We consider this decision by Parliament today as a highly vital interim constitutional reform that should have been implemented until a new constitution is adopted.

What is the 22nd Constitutional Amendment Act?

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President or acted as President for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.

Sri Lanka Says Inflation Nears Peak, Easing Pressure on Economy

(Bloomberg) – Sri Lanka’s 70% inflation is hitting its peak as crippling shortages ease, and bailout funds look within reach, yet it’s far from putting the central bank governor at ease.

“We think we are seeing the peak of inflation,” central bank governor Nandalal Weerasinghe said in an interview in Colombo on Thursday. “There’s still some way to go,” he said about fixing the island nation’s economy and finances.

The nation was now in a situation where it could manage “without new additional bridging finance until we go to the IMF board. This is why we think we have done our part,” he said. Weerasinghe doesn’t want the crisis dragging for “too long”, and his priority is “to provide for essential imports for the people.”

A statement from Gamage’s media unit said that the State Minister would be visiting Burbank in the United States next month to discuss initial plans for an 18-billion dollar investment in Sri Lanka, following an invitation from the Walt Disney Company.

She was invited by Alexia S. Quadrani, Senior Vice President of Investor Relations at the Walt Disney Company. The State Minister had written to the Walt Disney Company asking them to set up a Disneyland in Sri Lanka.
