Sudeeksha Samadhi Perera, A sought after talented bold actress in teledrama, stage, film to be emulated – By Sunil Thenabadu
Samadhi was born in Maharagama presently dwelling in Homagama area has one younger brother as the only sibling who is a Bank employee. Her father is attached to the Police department in the rank of Inspector of Police while mother is a housewife. Samadhi had attended Pannipitiya Dharmapala Vidyalaya from grade one had shown a vast promise for studies as well for drama activities which is not at all with hereditary affiliations, conceivably as with innate talent.. Her talents had been identified and recognised by her parents and teachers from her very young age in school During her fourth year in school in year 2004 she had come to the arts arena via a television channel through a children’s program which she had continued in school but had given a break during her ordinary levels and advanced levels eras. Her ambition when young was to become a lawyer or a teacher, but her characteristic innate talent for drama had drawn her towards the acting profession. In school the stage had been her beginning In school she had been in the habit of making her own scripts and making small dramas with classmates. She had been adjudicated as the best actress in school for three consecutive years 2005,2006 and 2007 also as the best director as such she was debarred from acting in stage dramas in school. In year 2011 she had been adjudicated as the best ‘Director’ in all island schools drama competition, while her drama was place second in the all island drama competition. Samadhi had been equally talented in sports in school having been an outstanding athlete and a hockey player, hence she had to decide between acting and sports. Samadhi’s parental duo is very understanding had given her the green light to proceed in this selected field of acting profession although Samadhi had won many awards in school and all island school sports meets.
Her drama teacher in school she reminisces as late Jayalal Rohana who had added that to learn acting is a tedious exercise as many students had given up when the two year drama lessons program ended. Samadhi reminisced that among one hundred and fifty students who attended the drama classes initially at the end only eight had remained as predicted by Jayala Rohana himself, one of them was she.Samadhi also in a television dialog had reminisced her other school teachers Uditha Sir and Miss Denepitiya for assisting her in dramas. Others who had helped in her journey are heavyweights like Jayalath Manoratne and Mahendra Perera for whose drama classes Samadhi had attended with enthusiasm.
Samadhi had come to the field after her education via a film audition to which was she was invited from where she had come to this rewarding field Samadhi affirmed that nowadays it is easy to come to this field via social media platforms, Facebook and Tick Tok etc but it is difficult to withstand in it properly.. Samadhi does not accept all roles offered to her though she has become somewhat of a sought-after actress. When she receives a script she reads very carefully, accepts only if she could do justice to it. She is a firm believer that if she accepts a role that she cannot perform to expectations she does a harm to herself to the director who selected her in good faith Samadhi believes to enter into teledramas one should have the aptitude and experience at least at school level. Samadhi has disclosed that an acting career for any prospective person is not that pleasant and enjoyable one but has to be patient, bold and be able to tolerate the constraints faced in order to sustain within this profession. Samadhi had admitted her innate curly hair had been a tremendous boost to her acting vocation which is not possessed by other actresses. One needs to be tolerant and possess the forte to survive it ,as there are many constraints to navigate over if one needs to persist and be stagnant in this field , of course one should learn the basics as how to face the camera is very vital to learn. Samadhi believes that one should enter this field after having studied and learnt basics in this field. After leaving school Samadhi had been adamant to find employment, until recently for nearly a decade she had been engaged in two jobs simultaneously, in a reputed travel agency as a senior finance executive and as an insurance advisor at the renowned Softlogic Company. But lately owing to her inability to take leave often as she was forced to oblige directors for work she had undertaken. She had to reluctantly though leave her professional careers. Samadhi loves challenges and be occupied fully with diverse work on any given day. She needs to focus her attention to the conduct and management of her Sudeeksha salon too which she had opened in year 2022.Samadhi believes in the maximum usage of the twenty four hours of the day.She had inquired from mother whether she is not bored in attending to cooking and domestic chaos. To Samadhi if she cannot stay occupied with many activities each day which she challenges,otherwise it would be a boring day to her. She is very emotional after been hurt for the slightest issue shed tears abruptly when she is hurt.She cries but not to be seen by anyone. The place she selects is her car but she recovers soon. She is a staunch Buddhist visit the Buddhist temple with her family but she also goes to church often with the same faith which her parents had not been in favour has had arguments. Samadhi had got caught to her parental duo reading the ‘Bible’ Though the duo disliked initially later had understood consenting to her wish. To Samadhi the religion is not be considered a barrier to any individual should be free to believe in any religion or religions . In life many of her decisions have been liked by her father and mother after disliking and disagreeing earlier..
Samadhi had come to the field when she was in year four class in year 2004 when she had got the opportunity to be invited to a children’s program in a certain television channel which she had continued to portray roles until her ordinary levels and Advanced levels examinations to which she had given prompt attention. But she had commenced her journey proper when she was invited for a ‘screen test’ for a film. To date Samadhi has portrayed diverse roles in over fifteen teledramas and not so much contributed to music videos also for commercial advertisements though she had been invited to. Samadhi had professed that her role of ‘Rehana’ in the teledrama ‘Divithura’ which had propelled her to fame to tall elevations. She was entrusted at the beginning the role of a singing ‘Rapper’ as just another character role but later was given her diverse roles which had captured all audiences. After the role of ‘Rehana’ Samadhi had developed a huge fan base with many appreciative comments after her career started in year 2013 over a decade ago. Samadhi had added at the sets all were friendly and she too was taken up with the crew with which her act is made easy. she hopes to continue with ‘Divithura’. Samadhi owes her immense popularity to ‘Hiru’ television channel for telecasting ‘Divithura’.. Samadhi in real life is an individual who helps her friends and in portrayal of this role too she is given this opportunity. Samadhi Relatively a novice actress had portrayed her role in ‘Divithura’ with steadfast stars like Hector Dias, Shanudrie Priyasad,Himali Sayurangi, Sujeewa Priyal, Athula Adikari, Sooriya Dayaruwan, Cletus Mendis etc. Her curly hair has been her born hair which is huge added advantageous to her as many directors choose her particularly for her curly hair.
All roles portrayed by Samadhi in teledramas had been hailed and been trending. A teledrama that consisted of fifty four episodes telecast in ITN channel was ‘Meenu’, Samadhi portrayed the role of “Rehani”, the script written by Gayani Asinsala a relatively new script writer contained fifty four episodes. Another spectacular role in this teledrama was portrayed by Samadhi along with stalwarts like Shalini Tharaka, Menaka Rajapaksa,Niroshan Wijesinghe,Sujeewa Priyalal,Lal Kularatne,Piyumi Boteju etc., all very much senior to Samadhi in their respective careers. Samadhi had not portrayed roles in many teledramas, but in all she portrayed roles she had come triumphant. Some teledramas that come to mind are ‘Shadow’ in Hiru television, ‘Raajini’ portrayal as “Rose’ ,in TV Derana, ‘Para Wasa Etha’ in Swarnavahini TV channel.There have been many instances when her separate portrayals in separate teledramas had run concurrently in our television channels like ‘Bro’ teledrama in ITN, ‘Heily’ in Swarnavahini,.At present in the Sirasa television the new drama ‘Maayavi’ in telecast on all five weekdays. To date only about 15 episodes have been telecast the script is of famous Mahesh Sathsara Madduma Arachchige directed by Sadun Rajapaksa with a star studded cast like Dusheni, Samadhi, Shantha Gallage etc where Samadhi portrays a major supporting role as the eldest daughter in a village family by name Latha Manjeswari where she portrays somewhat of a comedy role to delight all audiences. Samadi Perera continues to captivate vivid audiences with her exclusive innate acting prowess proving to be a striking presence in our entertaining industry.
Samadhi had been dreaming for a longtime to act in a stage drama as she felt portraying a role in front of a ‘live’ audience was a thrilling experience for her. Samadhi had told many colleagues about this wish which became a reality The wish became when one colleague of Samadhi had asked her whether she liked to portray a role in the stage play of Dulan Weerasinghe “Radical Premaya”. The story has come to the mind of Dulan in year 2016.Dulan says after a disagreement about love between him and his brother which had made him to script the story. After the play was produced Dulan had entered to the annual state stage festival competition where he had won several awards for the best play and for other categories. In year 2023 Dulan had wanted to reproduce the play ‘Radical Premaya’ again with a new cast. According to Dulan the story depicts a different view from the layman point of you. Samadhi had conveyed to the director cum producer to make her to change her acting pattern. The humbleness of Samadhi though a popular actress now is proved beyond any doubt.
Concurrently Samadhi’s longtime wish to portray a role in a film too was successful when she was invited to portray a role in the film ‘Soorya’ a film of Mahesh Munasinghe to be released shortly. Samadhi is once more very fortunate to be amongst star studded crew including Janith Wickremage, Dilhani Ekanayake ,Lucky Dias, Isuru Lokuhettiarachchi, Sanath Gunatilleke and others.
In the year 2023 she portrayed a role in her next film a highly anticipated movie teaser titled “VILLAIN”. Unveiled to the international audience too. The story revolves around the lives of influential figures in Colombo including their children and loved ones
Samadhi Perera over many television dialogues had stated that over the years she has had to face many constraints while at the sets , shootings, had heard jealous persons casting bad comments to disrupt her acting but she ignores them totally had performed to the expectations of the director and crew. Samadhi had added that Sri Lanka is still a primitive country with people with negative beliefs with many people with a low mentality. She believes Sri Lanka is still a third world country with an embryonic culture, hence she has learnt to bear all these constraints not allowing to least affect her acting career.She is single wishes to remain single though she had tasted what love is.one who prefers to be totally independent.
