SUNDAY CHOICE – He’s Still Working On Me – By Charles Schokman

‘Then this message from the Lord came to me: “Family of Israel, you know that I can do the same thing with you. You are like the clay in the potter’s hands, and I am the potter.” This message is from the Lord.’  Jeremiah 18:6

Some of you will remember this once popular Joel Hemphill song from the 1980s.  His song teaches the truth of Philippians 1:6: “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”  Hemphill wrote and performed the song hoping it would be popular with children, as well as adults, and remind us that God never gives up on us.

God began work on us, and God is the one who will complete it, which means that He is still working on us.  And this is exactly what the first verse/chorus of the song champions:

“He’s still working on me
To make me what I need to be
It took him just a week to make the moon and stars
The sun and the earth and Jupiter and Mars
How loving and patient He must be
‘Cause He’s still workin’ on me.”

There really ought to be a sign upon my heart
Don’t judge him yet, there’s an unfinished part
But I’ll be better just according to His plan
Fashioned by the Master’s loving hands

(chorus)

In the mirror of His word, reflections that I see
Makes me wonder why He never gave up on me
But He loves me as I am and helps me when I pray
Remember He’s the potter, I’m the clay

(chorus)

This image of God working on us is woven throughout Scripture. In 1 Peter 2:5, we are living stones that the Lord is shaping and growing and building up into a Spiritual House. We’re left with a picture of the Lord, with chisel in hand, cutting away the pieces that don’t belong, fashioning us according to his plan.

In Ephesians 2:10, we are described as God’s workmanship, his handiwork, his masterpiece, as though the Lord is a painter and we are the canvas where he creates a work of art for his glory.

There is sweet joy in knowing we don’t have to have it all together. We all have a Saviour who sees, know, and loves us in this messy journey called life. He is daily walking with and working on us to transform us into His image He is the Potter and we are clay as the Bible tells us in Jeremiah 18:5-6. He is still working on us!

Scripture assures us that God is not finished with us yet. He’s the skilled craftsman, the creative artist, chiseling, cutting, shaping, painting, and sanctifying us and our families until his work is complete. Doesn’t that make you smile?

Jesus is our source of strength. We don’t have to feel like we have it all together. Our goal is to seek after the One who is working and transforming us into His image. It’s a process full of grace, mercy, love, and patience. May we choose to daily meet with the Master Potter and allow Him to shape and mould us, all the while trusting He is able to use our flaws and failures for His Glory.

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:6-7      By Shannon Pederson.

“As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.” Ecclesiastes 11:5 (ESV).

What we know about God is far more important than what we don’t
Pray these hymn will remind us that God is still the potter and we are the clay.
What an awesome song! The Lord is still working on you & me!! and I am 95 years old.
