The Tallest Waterfall in Sri Lanka – Bambarakanda Falls – By Malsha – eLanka

Bambarakanda Falls

Sri Lanka is famous for its lush landscapes, misty mountains, and spectacular waterfalls. With more than a hundred waterfalls scattered across the island, the country is often described as a paradise for nature lovers. Among these natural wonders, Bambarakanda Falls stands out as the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka and one of the most breathtaking attractions in the country.

Introduction to Bambarakanda Falls

Bambarakanda Falls, also known as Bambarakele Falls, is the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, reaching a height of approximately 263 meters (863 feet). It is located in Kalupahana in the Badulla District, within the Uva Province. The waterfall lies close to the Colombo–Badulla main road (A4 highway), making it accessible to travelers exploring Sri Lanka’s central highlands.

This magnificent waterfall is ranked among the tallest waterfalls in the world, although it is best known for its beauty and dramatic drop rather than its global ranking. Surrounded by dense forests and pine trees, Bambarakanda Falls creates a magical natural environment that attracts both local and international visitors.

Formation and Water Source

The water of Bambarakanda Falls comes from Kuda Oya, which is a tributary of the Walawe River. The stream flows through the mountainous terrain before plunging down the rocky cliff to create the spectacular waterfall.

The waterfall flows in a single drop, forming a thin but powerful cascade that resembles a white ribbon falling from the sky. During the rainy season, the water flow increases dramatically, making the waterfall even more impressive and powerful.

Scenic Beauty and Natural Surroundings

One of the most remarkable features of Bambarakanda Falls is its surrounding landscape. The waterfall is located in a mountainous region filled with pine forests, tea plantations, and cool misty air. These surroundings create a peaceful and refreshing environment that attracts hikers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.

When visitors approach the waterfall, they can hear the roaring sound of water echoing through the forest. As the water crashes down from the height, it creates a cloud of fine mist that adds to the beauty of the scene. Many travelers describe Bambarakanda Falls as a natural masterpiece that perfectly represents the beauty of Sri Lanka’s hill country.

Access and Travel

Reaching Bambarakanda Falls is an adventure in itself. Travelers must take the A4 Colombo–Badulla road and turn off at Kalupahana Junction. From there, a narrow road leads about 4–5 kilometers through scenic countryside and plantations to the waterfall area.

Once visitors arrive at the entrance, they usually walk through a short forest trail to reach the base of the waterfall. The walk is pleasant and surrounded by tall pine trees and fresh mountain air. There are also hiking paths for those who wish to explore the area further or climb to viewpoints overlooking the waterfall.

Tourism and Visitor Experience

Bambarakanda Falls has become a popular destination for tourists, hikers, and photographers. Visitors often come here to experience:

  • Stunning views of the tall cascading waterfall

  • Cool mountain climate and peaceful surroundings

  • Scenic hiking trails through forests

  • Natural pools at the base of the waterfall

Although the site is relatively remote compared to some other waterfalls in Sri Lanka, its untouched beauty makes it even more special. Travelers often combine their visit with nearby attractions such as Belihuloya, Haputale, and the Devil’s Staircase trail, which is famous among adventure seekers.

Nearby Waterfalls

The region around Bambarakanda Falls is also home to several other beautiful waterfalls. Some notable ones include:

  • Lanka Ella

  • Yalathenna Ella

  • Uduwara Ella

These waterfalls may not be as tall as Bambarakanda, but they add to the scenic richness of the area and provide additional spots for exploration and photography.

Comparison with Other Sri Lankan Waterfalls

While Bambarakanda Falls is the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka, the island also has many other famous waterfalls. One notable example is Diyaluma Falls, which is the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka at about 220 meters.

Other popular waterfalls include Dunhinda Falls, Ramboda Falls, and Laxapana Falls. Each of these waterfalls has its own unique charm and contributes to Sri Lanka’s reputation as a land of waterfalls.

Environmental Importance

Waterfalls like Bambarakanda play an important role in the island’s ecosystem. They support surrounding forests, provide water for rivers and reservoirs, and contribute to biodiversity. Many species of plants, birds, and insects thrive in the humid environments created by waterfalls.

Protecting these natural treasures is essential for maintaining Sri Lanka’s ecological balance and preserving its beauty for future generations.

Conclusion

Bambarakanda Falls is not only the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka but also one of the most spectacular natural attractions in the country. Its towering height, breathtaking scenery, and peaceful surroundings make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Sri Lanka’s hill country.

Whether you are a nature lover, adventure seeker, or traveler looking for scenic beauty, Bambarakanda Falls offers an unforgettable experience. Standing at the base of this majestic waterfall and watching the water plunge from the mountain above is a reminder of the incredible power and beauty of nature.
