==============
Sadly, we say ‘fare thee well’, to one of our MOST famous Artist/Cartoonists of our Motherland, Sri Lanka. Maxie, as he was known, was not just a talented Cartoonist, he could rapidly sketch a picture of anyone, (even from a photograph), & the result was identical (even BETTER, with the astounding ‘touch’ of this great man, upon it).
He was a personal friend of mine, and we were in touch quite often, via the telephone, and whenever I did speak to him, I ended up laughing at the Gerreyn humour which never failed to manifest itself, even on the phone. He was happy at home in Perth, with his wife, children, & grandchildren who were always ‘with him’ when I rang. To me, Maxie was always a ‘happy chappie’ & he used to refer to me, as Dezza-boy.
It was such a pleasure to even just ‘talk’ to him, and then, quite suddenly, during the latter months of last year, I rang him, only to find out that he had been taken ill, and was in hospital over there. I could not speak to him in hospital, and did keep ringing, hoping to find him back home, only to find out that he was still at hospital, in rehabilation now, with little hope of coming back home. However, as his dear wife Shereen informed me, Maxie was still being visited by her & the members of the family.
I let the matter rest, and, then THIS very sad messsge on FB.
“MAXIE, you are gone my friend, never to be forgotten by those who knew you well. Dezza boy will join you, no doubt, sooner rather than later, wherever you are, to talk, joke, & laugh again, as we used to do, so often. I am gonna miss you, Maxie boy, but rest in peacd now, in the arms of your Saviour, who also died for you, just last week. My sincere sympathies to his family and countless other friends.
