Sri Lankan singer Yohani is set to perform at the 13th edition of the Ziro Festival of Music in Arunachal Pradesh, India, joining a line-up of 41 acts and artists from more than 10 countries, in an appearance that places original Sri Lankan music, performed predominantly in Sinhala, before an international audience at one of India’s established independent music festivals.

For Dilanjan Seneviratne, Founder and CEO of Colombo-based entertainment company Outright Play, the performance represents a significant milestone in a journey that began with Yohani’s viral success in 2021 and has since developed into a broader effort to establish sustainable international opportunities for Sri Lankan artists.

In an interview with Colombo Gazette, Seneviratne described the significance of Yohani’s appearance not merely through the scale of the festival, but through the changing expectations surrounding Sri Lankan talent.

> “It means a lot. I’ll try not to dress it up. Ziro is in its 13th edition, with 41 acts and artists from more than 10 countries, and she’s walking on stage with her own songs, mostly in Sinhala. That hasn’t happened before, not at this level.”

He added that the most meaningful aspect of the performance was the manner in which it was being received.

“But honestly, the part that moves me isn’t the stage. It’s that nobody’s surprised she’s there. Five years ago, this would have been a miracle story. Now it’s a booking. That shift, from miracle to normal, is the whole point of what we do.”

A major independent festival in Arunachal Pradesh

The Ziro Festival of Music is being staged in a valley in Arunachal Pradesh, on the lands of the Apatani community, and has been running since 2012. Over 13 editions, it has developed a reputation as one of India’s most respected independent music festivals, attracting artists and audiences interested in original music, regional identity and cross-border cultural exchange.

The 2026 edition has attracted coverage from The Indian Express, NDTV, Outlook Traveller and Rolling Stone India, while its international line-up includes artists from Algeria, Ireland, Palestine and Korea, among other countries.

For Sri Lanka, Yohani’s participation is particularly notable because she will be presenting her own catalogue rather than appearing as a guest performer or adapting her repertoire primarily for Hindi- or English-speaking audiences. Her set is expected to feature original music predominantly in Sinhala, placing the language at the centre of an international festival environment.

From viral recognition to a sustained career

Yohani became widely recognised across India following the success of “Manike Mage Hithe” in 2021. The song introduced her voice to audiences far beyond Sri Lanka and created an international moment that could easily have remained confined to the short lifespan of a viral hit.

Outright Play has managed Yohani’s career since its early stages, overseeing her transition from viral recognition to an international music career while developing an integrated management, publishing and production operation in Sri Lanka.

Seneviratne explained that the team deliberately resisted the temptation to chase the immediate attention generated by the song.

> “Because we didn’t chase the moment. A viral hit is loud, and the temptation is to stay loud. We went quiet instead.”

The strategy was centred on creating new work, touring properly and building relationships with Indian audiences and industry partners over time. According to Seneviratne, the company developed albums including Kella, followed by Aadarei, and now Sadde, while treating each release as part of a longer artistic and commercial plan.

> “Made albums. ‘Kella’, then ‘Aadarei’, now ‘Sadde’. Toured properly. Built real relationships in India rather than extracting attention from it.”

He observed that India did not owe any external artist a continuing audience, and that a second opportunity had to be earned through consistent work.

> “You earn the second look with new work.”

Five years after Yohani’s breakthrough, the market that first responded to her music is now inviting her back to an established international festival. That progression suggests that sustained creativity, professional touring and genuine relationships can convert short-term recognition into a more durable career.

Sinhala identity as creative strength

Yohani’s appearance at Ziro also carries cultural importance because her linguistic identity has not been treated as an obstacle to international growth. Rather than removing the Sinhala character of her music to make it more easily familiar to overseas listeners, her team has retained the qualities that distinguish her artistic voice.

Seneviratne described this decision as central to Yohani’s appeal.

> “We just decided a long time ago that the thing that made her interesting was that she sounds like where she’s from. If you sand that off to fit in, you fit in, and then you disappear.”

He clarified that the use of Sinhala at Ziro was not intended as a confrontational gesture.

> “Sinhala at Ziro isn’t a statement of defiance. It’s just her, doing her songs, the way they were written.”

The significance of the performance, he suggested, lies partly in the historical absence of such opportunities for Sri Lankan-language music on prominent international stages.

> “If it lands as historic, that says more about how long the door was closed than about how loudly we’re walking through it.”

Building infrastructure so artists retain ownership

Seneviratne also emphasised that international opportunities are created through infrastructure long before an artist walks onto a festival stage. A booking of this scale depends upon properly finished recordings, professional management, catalogue ownership, publishing arrangements and the capacity to manage live production across borders.

Outright Play has developed an integrated operation in Colombo that brings management, label services, publishing, studio facilities, media and live production under one roof. Seneviratne described this structure as the result of years of work that is rarely visible to the public.

> “Years of unglamorous work that nobody claps for. A booking like this is the last visible inch of a very long structure.”

He also highlighted the importance of retaining ownership of the music, explaining that Yohani’s masters and publishing have been structured globally with Reservoir Media.

> “We structured her masters and publishing globally with Reservoir Media so that, when the world calls, the artist answers as an owner, not a tenant.”

That distinction is consequential for Sri Lankan musicians seeking international careers, because global recognition is of limited long-term value if artists are unable to control the recordings, publishing rights and commercial relationships that support their work.

Creating opportunities for the next generation

Outright Play’s ambitions extend beyond Yohani. Seneviratne said the company’s developing roster is intended to demonstrate that Yohani’s success was not an isolated event, but an indication of what can be achieved when emerging artists are supported by professional systems.

Among the artists highlighted is SANA, an 18-year-old singer with a debut album of original songs and an individual artistic identity.

> “Yohani proved it could be done once. The roster is about proving it wasn’t a one-off.”

He described SANA as an example of a young artist whose career is being approached as a long-term undertaking rather than a brief opportunity for attention.

> “Eighteen years old, debut album, original songs, her own identity, and a company around her treating her career as a long project rather than a moment.”

The broader objective, he said, is straightforward:

> “The next Sri Lankan artist shouldn’t need a miracle.”

Sri Lankan music on its own terms

Yohani’s forthcoming Ziro performance offers a positive example of Sri Lankan creativity reaching international audiences without surrendering its linguistic or cultural foundation. Her appearance is being supported by a career built through original music, professional touring, catalogue development and ownership-focused industry arrangements.

For Seneviratne, the lesson extends beyond a single artist or festival.

> “The world isn’t waiting for us, but it isn’t against us either. It’s indifferent, and indifference is beaten by excellence, repeated.”

He concluded with an observation that places Sri Lankan identity at the centre of, rather than outside, international creative ambition:

> “Being from here was never the limitation. Most days, it’s the material.”

As Yohani prepares to perform her own Sinhala songs in the Arunachal Pradesh valley, the occasion represents more than an individual appearance. It demonstrates the growing capacity of Sri Lankan musicians and creative companies to build international careers through authenticity, sustained excellence and carefully developed professional foundations.
