52nd Convocation 2026 – University of Sri Jayewardenepura-by Harold Gunatillake

The University of Sri Jayewardenepura held its 52nd General Convocation from October 13 to 16, 2026, at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), Colombo. Over four days and across twelve sessions, the university celebrated the academic accomplishments of 4,765 graduates representing its diverse faculties.
Among the distinguished graduands was Lasanthi Wimalasurendra, my sister’s daughter, who currently serves as an Administrative Officer at the Right to Information Commission.
A past graduate of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, she successfully completed the Master of Sociology program offered by the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS), joining 25 other candidates who fulfilled the rigorous academic requirements.
Master of Sociology – Focus on Information Officer Challenges Lasanthi’s postgraduate research centred on the challenges faced by Information Officers, a timely and socially relevant area of study given Sri Lanka’s ongoing efforts to strengthen transparency, public accountability, and the effective implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Her work contributes to a growing body of knowledge that supports better governance and improved public service delivery.
A Moment of Pride
The formal conferment of the Master of Sociology degree took place during the convocation’s grand finale, marking a proud milestone not only for Lasanthi but also for her colleagues, mentors, and family.
The Faculty of Graduate Studies continues to play a pivotal role in advancing higher education and research excellence, and this cohort of Sociology graduates reflects the university’s commitment to producing professionals equipped to address contemporary social issues.
Lasanthi’s achievement stands as a testament to her dedication, professional commitment, and passion for strengthening Sri Lanka’s information governance landscape.
