A Tradition of Joy: The Monthly Seniors’ Day of the Sri Lankan Association of NSW-by Harold Gunatillake

Among Sydney’s Sri Lankan community traditions, few are as treasured as the Monthly Seniors’ Day, lovingly organised by the Sri Lanka Association of New South Wales. Usually held on Tuesdays at the Leisure Centre in Pennant Hills, this gathering has become a beloved cultural cornerstone, where friendship, nostalgia, and laughter blend beautifully in a warm Sri Lankan spirit.
Established years ago, under the presidency of Sam Masachchi, the event has grown into an enduring institution, carried forward by successive leaders, including Saliya Tennakoon. Seniors eagerly anticipate each gathering—not simply as an event, but as a celebration of life, memory, and community.
A Day Filled with Familiar Joys
The atmosphere at these gatherings captures the spirit of Sri Lanka—warm, lively, and full of personality. Seniors arrive with bright smiles, greeting old friends, sharing stories, and settling into a cosy rhythm that feels just like home.
They sing beloved old songs, sometimes a bit off-key, but always with lots of heart.
Playing cards is a favourite activity, sparking friendly rivalry and playful banter.
Friends happily gossip, sharing news from Sri Lanka and Sydney with equal enthusiasm.
Everyone laughs at familiar jokes, lovingly repeated over the years. And conversations often turn to health, a universal part of growing older, made lighter and more comforting when shared among friends.
Then there’s the food — a simple meal available for a $5 contribution, though stepping up is entirely optional.
The Association generously sponsors the entire program, ensuring no senior feels burdened or left out.
It’s a beautiful act of kindness, reflecting the Association’s deep commitment to honouring the elders who have helped shape and maintain the vibrant Sri Lankan community in Sydney.

A Community That Cares
The Sri Lankan Association of NSW has long been a strong support network for its members, really shining in its commitment to seniors. Through this ongoing monthly tradition, the Association ensures elders feel connected, stay active, and remain valued members of the community. It’s a beautiful example of how community care can inspire so many other diaspora groups around the world. For the seniors who join, these Tuesdays are more than social gatherings. They serve as gentle reminders that they truly belong
— part of a caring community that remembers their contributions, celebrates their stories, and cherishes their presence.
A Legacy Worth Preserving
As Sydney’s Sri Lankan community continues to grow and blossom, the Monthly Seniors’ Day shines as a beautiful example of the strength found in coming together. It’s a heartfelt tradition rooted in kindness, lasting connections, and pride in our culture. That’s part of what makes Sri Lankan seniors in Sydney enjoy a social life that stands out among communities worldwide. This monthly gathering isn’t just an event; it’s a cherished legacy — something to be treasured, celebrated, and passed on to future generations.
