popular Sri Lankan snack ” Parippu wade ” – By Malsha – eLanka

Parippu wade

Parippu wade is a popular snack food in Sri Lanka made from split yellow peas. It is typically made by grinding split yellow peas into a coarse mixture and shaping the mixture into small, round wades. These wades are then deep-fried until they are golden brown and crispy.

The flavor of Parippu wade is often enhanced with spices such as cumin powder, chili powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, and garam masala. They can be served as a snack with chutney or ketchup, or as a side dish with a meal.

Overall, Parippu wade is a tasty and convenient snack that is easy to make and enjoyed by people of all ages in Sri Lanka.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup split yellow peas (toor dal)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Oil for deep-frying

Instructions:

  1. Soak the split yellow peas in water for 2 hours.
  2. Drain the water and grind the peas into a coarse mixture, adding very little water if necessary.
  3. In a bowl, mix the ground peas with the chopped onion, green chilies, salt, cumin powder, chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and turmeric powder.
  4. Shape the mixture into small, round wades.
  5. Heat the oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds.
  6. When the mustard seeds start to crackle, add the cumin seeds and asafoetida.
  7. Stir for a few seconds, then add the shaped wades.
  8. Fry the wades until they are golden brown and crispy, turning them occasionally.
  9. Serve hot with chutney or ketchup.
