Shanthipura – highest viewpoint with spectacular vistas – By Arundathie Abeysinghe

Shanthipura

Arundathie AbeysingheSri Lanka is renowned globally as one of the most spectacular places. This tiny island is only 9,833,517 square kilometers, yet has a huge range of diverse breathtaking landscapes to offer; mist clad spectacular mountains and cliffs, carpets of verdant tea plantations, spectacular cascades, lush forests, scenic view points and pristine beaches…

There are many spectacular viewpoints in Sri Lanka with several precipices offering breathtaking vistas of the surrounding area and valleys, in addition to popular World’s End and Mini World’s End at *Horton Plains. Mini World’s Ends at *Little Adam’s Peak in Ella and *Hulangala in Selagama that are viewpoints with awe-inspiring vistas.

Situated at the foot of Kikiliyamana Mountain in Nuwara Eliya, the fifth tallest mountain in Sri Lanka, Shanthipura is the highest village in Sri Lanka. Shanthipura View Point provides amazing panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape that includes Pidurutalagala Mountain, Sri Lanka’s tallest mountain, Hakgala Mountain, Sri Pada Mountain, Gregory’s Lake, Radella Radio transmission hill, Seven Virgins Mountains and Nuwara Eliya town.

Situated at an altitude of approximately 2236 meters (7339 feet) and approximately 395 meters (1300 feet) above Nuwara Eliya town, it is better to hike up to the view point when the sun is milder.

Shanthipura is a little hamlet with panoramic vistas of the serene blue mountains including the adjacent lake and lush tea plantations.

Shanthipura

Situated in Kandy-Nuwara Eliya Road, approximately 7.9 km from Nuwara Eliya towards Kandy, it is necessary to travel away from the main road and climb a hill to reach the view point. There are boards along the route up to the view point. The location is open (for viewing) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Although, the site is spectacular at night, it is not open to the public. It is better to reach the view point on a day when the weather is fine as the views from the location may not be clear on a misty day.

The winding road up to the view point is breathtaking and the views along the road are equally spectacular.
