In Christianity, Redeemer is one of the many titles that have been applied to Jesus. It is similar to calling Jesus the Saviour or Deliverer. Christians often refer to Jesus’s act of redemption as a transaction, as in Jesus died to pay for our sins.
God is both loving and just. In his great love he wants to save people, but justice demands that someone must bear the punishment and pay the price for sin. Jesus Christ is a unique and perfectly qualified Redeemer. He is the only one who can redeem a people for God.
The need of a Redeemer lies in the inability of man to raise himself from the temporal to the spiritual plane, from the lower kingdom to the higher.
He was born to be the Saviour and Redeemer of all mankind. He was able to accomplish His mission because He was the Son of God and He possessed the power of God. He was willing to accomplish His mission because He loves us.
The hymn describes Jesus’ death and atonement for sin on the cross at Cavalry in Jerusalem as reported in Matthew’s and Mark’s gospels in the New Testament and for the redemption of sinners as explained in the New Testament Book of Romans.
